Everything goes terribly wrong on an Australian morning newscast. Australia's version of the "Today" show is taking the meaning of lake monster to a whole new level. We have all seen the mishaps of Hoda and Kathie Lee on the Today Show, but now anchors on the Today show in Australia are embracing an awkward situation.

The story starts out as a report about a possible shark sighting in Evandale Lake, in the coastal city of Gold Coast. Anchor Karl Stefanovic undercuts the seriousness of the report by breaking into a laugh, which continues through the entire story as everything seemingly goes wrong. Paul Burt who is reporting live at Evandale Lake casts a fishing line into the lake to tempt the shark, but catches another lake resident, which happens to be a duck.

What started out as a serious story on a possible shark sighting turned into nothing but an awkward situation. It may not be broadcast journalism at its best, but with all of the negative things going on in the media, it's something to laugh at.

Have you been feeling the strains from work, and the everyday demands of life? Chances are you've been thinking about that much needed vacation. Your brain probably needs a little rest of its own as well.

Stress among adults and teens has raised concerns for many health officials in last decade. Living in a technological world, where the media is constantly in our face on a 24/7 basis can increase our stress levels dramatically. According to a poll done on 1500 American adults in 2009, approximately half of them said they didn't use up all of their vacation days because of being a workaholic.

You may be wondering where am I going to get the money for a vacation, or how I am I going to find the time? Begin by saving up a little money at a time, and let your boss know early. Demand for a vacation don't ask.

A State University of New York survey found that men who took annual vacations reduced their risk of death by 20 percent, and men who didn't take any vacations in five years had the highest death rate, and risk of heart disease than any other men surveyed. A study done in the Wisconsin Medical Journal found that women who took annual vacations were less stressed, tense or tired. Women who rarely took vacations were more likely to sleep less and have more stress.

Taking a vacation is good for the body, mind and the soul. It's a way to step back from your daily routines, and be able to relax, and look at life from a outsiders perspective. Also, detatching yourself from a regular environment can give you a new outlook on life, and boost your creative thinking. Have you ever heard the phrase "I just need to get away." Just getting away from where you live is really important, because detaching yourself from your home, and going to a different location creates excitement from discovering unknown territory. Not only is a vacation good for the body, mind and the soul but it is good to revamp relationships as well. It's a way to reconnect and revitalize relationships with your .

If this hasn't convinced you to take a vacation, I don't know what will. So start planning, and give yourself the vacation you deserve.

Anyone who has had a loved one, relative or family friend diagnosed with Alzheimer knows that this disease is brutal, and requires support and patience. With or without warning it wipes you of your memory, and then leads to more health complications because of not remembering to eat and so on..

According to CNN, 5.4 million people suffer from Alzheimer's in the United States, and is the sixth leading cause of death. The Alzheimer's Association states that by the middle of the century 16 million people will be diagnosed with this condition.

When my grandma was detected with having Alzheimer's six years ago, she didn't want to believe that she had the disease. She was known throughout the family as having the best memory. As the years went on she began to forget more and more. She no longer recognized or remembered where she lived or who her own family was.

Anyone who is familiar with Alzheimer's knows that there are three different stages to the disease. The first stage is preclinical, and for research purposes only to find out if patients have Alzheimer's even when they don't have any cognitive or memory problems. The second stage is mild cognitive impairment where someone may show small signs in their behavior and memory. If you are diagnosed in this stage it is just prolonging the cycle the disease will take. The last stage known as dementia is when memory, thinking and behavioral problems have become so severe that the persons ability to function is hindered dramatically.

My grandmother was diagnosed at stage two, and she stayed at that same stage for about three years until it got worse. There is still not a cure for the disease, but there are many medications to prolong the cycle of this horrible disease. The main importance is to stay supportive, loving and understanding to whoever may have this illness.

Project Pregnancy

Around 820,000 teens get pregnant annually according to most recent government statistics. The struggles of a teen mom include a very long list of demands and sacrifices. Gaby Rodriguez, a senior at south -central Washington highschool made being pregnant her senior project. After six long months she finally revealed to nearly 700 of her fellow students that she was in fact not pregnant.

She faked her own pregnancy for six months, and wore a home-made prosthetic bulge made out of wire mesh and cotton quilt batting. Only a handful of people knew she was faking including her mother, boyfriend and her highschool principal.

The point of the experiment was to show everyone about the perception of a pregnant highschool student, and the stereotypes and rumors she had to face. The 16-year-old A student will share the results of her project in May.

This story sheds some light on the struggles young pregnant teens have to face when they are at school every day. If you were in the same situation would you want anyone judging you?

Student with no hands awarded for Penmanship

Fifth grader Nicholas Maxim was born without hands and limbs, but that didn't stop him from winning an award for his participation in Zaner-Bloser's 20th annual National Handwriting Contest.

With a can do attitude Nick walked up to the stage, and received a trophy during a school assembly in front of his family, friends and teachers for his excellent penmanship.

His story is inspirational to many, considering the tough odds he has overcome. To many of his friends he is no different than them. He can play football, soccer and write just like the rest of his friends.

He writes by clutching a pencil between his upper arms, and goes about every task the same way, tryinn hard at everything he does.

Zaner Bloser has now decided to create a new category in his honor, and the winner will receive the Nick Maxim trophy.

Many people all over the world with disabilities can look up to Nicholas Maxim, and not let their disability be a hindrance to them but rather a way to overcome and aspire the greatest obstacles in life.

Oprah OUT Rosie O'Donnell IN

Rosie O'Donnell will be moving into Harpo Studios this fall after Oprah's final farewell to her legendary show. This is good news for Chicago as yet another celebrity ambassador will be taking over day-time television.

O'Donnell released a taped message to Harpo staff saying "Thank you, Oprah. And thank all you people there. Some of you are going to be sticking around to make a kick-ass show for the Oprah Winfrey Network."

There is also good news for Oprah's current Harpo staff who will go on to work on Rosie's show. O'Donnell told O Magazine that her new show will be less celebrity driven and will focus on one topic for an hour including everyday topics and issues such as relationships, health and weight.

Having her own show is nothing new to O'Donnell. Lets go back 15 years ago to the Rosie O'Donnell show where she graced six consecutive daytime Emmys for her show, which lasted from 1996 to 2002. O'Donnell also had a short lived stint on the view, which lasted only a year.

There's no doubt that O'Donnell has won Oprah over not only with the privilege to work on her world-wide famous stage, but she has won Oprah's trust and respect. Let's keep the cameras rolling as Rosie moves in this fall.

Your debit card may soon be denied. One of the nations largest banks, JP Morgan Chase is considering capping debit card transactions at either 50 or 100 dollars.

The changes are being considered because of interchange fees. Currently every time you swipe your debit card, your bank charges the retailer 44 cents that it shares with its partners. Those fees add up to 16 billion dollars a year according to data from the Federal Reserve.

The Wall Street reform passed legislation last year that would lower the fees to 12 cents. The changes won't go into effect until July of 2011. Chase is already testing $3 dollar monthly fees on debit cards, and $15 fees on checking accounts in certain states. The bank has also announced that it has stopped issuing debit reward cards.

If a cap like this does make its way to consumer accounts then they would be forced to write checks, take money from ATM's or even to put money on their credit cards. The people who need the most help are the one's who will be hurt the most. People who have bad credit that commonly use their debit card will now have to abide by a $50 or $100 dollar cap limit. Cell Phones and Brain Cell Activity

Three hundred Million Americans have them, and we rely on them for everything. I'm talking about cell phones. The age of cell phones has reached all time heights with the birth of I-phones and smart phone technology. Cell phones have been linked to even more remarkable uses.

A new government funded study has found that the radiation given off just after 50 minutes of being on your phone increases the activity of brain cells. According to the study, phones that were turned off didn't create the same activity. This is the first time in any study where they looked specifically at how electromagnetic radiation from cell phones affects glucose metabolism, which is a normal function in the brain.

Basically more brain activity means that your cells are creating more energy. A number of health risks have long time been associated with the use of cell phones from the radiation. The Interphone project, coordinated by the International Agency for Research on Cancer wants to put those rumors to rest after doing the largest study on cell phone use. It included subjects who used cell phones for ten years or longer. The project concluded that overall no increase risk was observed with the use of cell phones.

Although these studies conclude that cell phone use is in fact non hazardous to one's health, a person with brain damage who exposes his or her self to radiation could be triggering something dangerous says the lead study author, Nora Valkow.

Valentines Day is a week away, and many will be celebrating it with their loved ones. But not everyone has that special someone to spend it with. A new study done my UCLA researchers have found that loneliness is in fact bad for your health. It isn't merely about surrounding yourself with people, but a state of mind in which you can't count on anyone in your waking life.

The study was comprised of 93 adults. They found that people who say they're chronically lonely have an overexpression of genes connected to cells that produce an inflammatory response to cells. Long term inflammation eventually leads to cardiovascular disease and cancer.

According to the research done by UCLA researchers, there have been many studies done on the health affects from loneliness, but it is important to learn more about the biological mechanisms of these affects.

You might be wondering how does one prevent loneliness from occurring? According to many studies, it says that one should be active, and surround themselves with positive influences, and people who care about them. Don't be afraid to meet new people, and build connections with others. Whether you are single or living alone, it is vital to socialize. Laughing and having a good time has always been helpful for people who are feeling down or who just didn't have a good day.

Loneliness is a serious problem that many people deal with on a daily basis. If you know someone who is dealing with this problem, take time out and listen to them. Let them know you care. A few words can go a long way to someone who is suffering from loneliness.

White Out

The blizzard of 2011 will definitely go down in history as one of the worst blizzards in Chicago history. People all around the city were rushing to get off work yesterday, but last night 600 to 900 people were stranded on Lake Shore drive after a series of car accidents. People began to leave their cars, and brace the blizzard, while the drivers who stayed in their cars were there for 12 hours. Chicago city officials made statements before and after the blizzard urging drivers to be cautious, to not leave their cars if they got stuck, and to avoid driving if possible.

The blizzard also brought with its wrath lighting, and thunder that knocked down power, leaving thousands of Chicagoans without electricity. According to CBS 2 in Chicago many roads were and still are closed due to the hazardous conditions. All public schools and city colleges were closed for the first time since 1999, when the city faced its last major blizzard. Chicago public schools will remain closed on Thursday as well.

Governor Pat Quinn issued more national guards to the state to help out with the snow clean up. There have been many reports of people helping eachother dig out their cars, and one lady provided food for the stranded motorists on Lake Shore drive last night.

Although there is no school in Chicago, that won't keep kids from going outside, where they were sledding and skiing on Lake Shore drive and at Grant Park. The side streets and alleys remain non drivable as city road crews focus on cleaning main roads.

Many people all over the country will remember where they were the day the horrendous blizzard hit. Time will tell how long it will take for streets and businesses to go back to normal.

"We do big things" President Obama

President Barack Obama spoke to America last night as he gave his annual State of the Union address. Obama talked about the economic changes we have overcome the past few years as well as making his case for future government actions.

The economy is on course for economic disaster if there is no serious action to gain control of the budget deficit. Many Americans have felt the financial burden for many years now due to the shaky economy. In response to President Obama's State of the Union address, House Budget Committee Chairman, Paul Ryan said spending cuts need to start immediately to increase the governments ability to borrow to pay its bills this upcoming spring.

President Obama addressed the necessary issues the country was waiting to hear such as emphasis on education and innovation to declaring the "era of big government" to be over. He also talked about security, and grounding the budget deficit through less spending.

Also, Republicans and Democrats were ordered in a different seating chart, where they sat together. The idea of the seating chart addresses the need for Democrats and Republicans to work together on the economy's problems.

According to online campaign tracking statistics, Obama has kept 124 of his campaign promises and has broken 38.

Obama closed the State of the Union address by stating "We do big things. The idea of America endures. Our destiny remains our choice. It is because of the people our future is hopeful, our journey goes forward, and the state of our union is strong."

Round 2 of The Bachelor

Last night brought a wave of relief when Brad eliminated the two drama queens of the house. Best decision by far! The season would not be as enjoyable to watch with catty girls Melissa and Raichel constantly bickering at each other. And for the record, I would say after carefully watching the arguments of who-said-what, 32-year-old Melissa is the instigator. End of story.

But wait, a third person was also eliminated. Keltie the Radio City Rockette from Hollywood, Calif. was sent home and her on-the-spot interview was quite shocking and sad to hear. She said that she is the worst dater ever. That in fact, she should receive an Oscar for worst dater. Oh honey, don't ever put yourself down like that on national television. Keltie went on explaining that she is very awkward during dates and has not had any success with regular dating, set-ups or on-line dating. Not even dating within the work place has worked out for her. Well, duh for that last one. When does it ever work out when you're dating a co-worker?

That was all news to me because she seemed like a strong, confident woman. When she stepped out of the limousine the first night and kicked up her better-looking-than-Tina Turner leg, I was taken back. And as a plus, she's a Radio City Rockette. I would have never taken her for an insecure person as she sounded after elimination, while looking so glamorous in her evening attire. I would have liked her to have gone further in the show.

A Critique about abc's The Bachelor

Smack! Ouch! I'm in love. It seems that's how it's happened for this season's The Bachelor Brad Womack. The first show aired Monday night on the abc network, in case you missed it.

Chantal O., executive assistant from Seattle, Wash., is the infamous woman who slapped Brad across the face in their first meeting. After the low blow- on the cheek- Brad said that 1) he deserved it and 2) he thinks he likes her already. Really?

First of, how dare the women on this show bad mouth Brad for what he did in season 11. I understand he broke two women's hearts, but hey, give the guy some credit for having been honest with his feelings about not being ready back then. Or would you rather have had him go through with the engagement, get married and then speak-up about his issues? Divorce is a lot messier and expensive, and I think he did the right thing about not proposing to anyone.

The women in this season's show should not be so hard on him. If he's back after three years of the therapy, I'm sure everything will work out. Open-up your ears ladies and listen to what the man is telling you. The past is history; no need to bring it up and cause drama. So what if he's broken a few hearts? Who hasn't been hurt or unintentionally hurt others?

This show is competitive so prepare for battle and know that love is a risk, in any relationship or situation. So grow up you girls and start acting like real women.

Knowing What Your Dreams Mean

Have you ever woke up from a dream, and thought why did I have a dream like that? Chances are, you're among the millions of Americans who have had the same dream. But the real question is what do they mean?

I often write down what my dreams were about, and try to decide for myself what they mean. But at times I can't contemplate their meanings. Dreams have been a mystery since the beginning of time. One can learn a lot from their dreams, if they let themselves do so.

Dreams are basically a way for the subconscious mind to warn or help you work through events in your life. So sometimes suppressed feelings that someone may have may come up in their dreams as a way to let them know that they need to express themselves or face a problem from their past or present.

One way to understand what your dreams mean is by remembering all of the dreams that you have. To do so, it's important to write them all down. According to a website called sleep.com dreams go through several stages such as a movie, and in the end you get to see the final product. Make sure you are relaxed before you go to sleep, and pay close attention to an issue that is bothering you, but don't worry yourself too much because you will most likely not be able to fall asleep. Also, tell yourself that you will remember your dreams, and mean it.

After you wake up begin to see if you remembered your dream, and focus on certain themes that are occurring throughout your dream or dreams. A typical dream that occurs frequently in people's dreams are that of them flying. This dream in most cases is a result of something going right in someone's life whether it be an accomplishment or through a relationship. If you're feeling joyful or confident in the dream, then you're feeling as if things are going quite well for you in your life. Now if you're feeling fearful, then that means you are most likely afraid of challenges.

Remember the key to understanding your dreams is to recall the themes associated with your dreams, and to stay in the habit of writing your dreams down.

Lunar Eclipse

Don't forget to look up in the sky tonight, and see the moon's color darken to the color of a dark orange. The moon's color during the lunar eclipse is caused by sunlight filtering through the Earth's atmosphere.

You will be able to see the lunar eclipse all across North America. For people living east of the Mississippi, you won't be able to see the eclipse until after midnight.

The lunar eclipse will last three and a half hours. The moon will fall into the depths of the Earth's shadow for about an hour and twelve minutes. When the Earth moves between the sun and the moon, it changes the tint of the lunar surface from white to orange, to tan and back. You will be seeing the effect Earth's atmosphere is having on the color of sunlight passing through it.

Unfortunately cities such as Los Angeles, Chicago, Denver and Boston, clouds will be in the way of the lunar eclipse. But if you're living around New York, Philadelphia, Miami and Dallas you will be able to enjoy the lunar eclipse without cloudy conditions.

So get your telescope and look up into the sky and see one of the wonders of science right before your eyes.

Gone by Extinction

I don't feel like a valued customer for the beauty company Lancome. Once again, it has happened; a product has been discontinued without fair warning.

I confess, I have oily skin. Unattractive I know. So I use the Pure Focus line of products for oily skin- to control my shine- by Lancome. I completely ran out of my face lotion, which is the Pure Focus Matifying Moisturizing Lotion. I go to the store to buy another one, and the sales lady tells me that there were no more behind the Lancome counter. So I go to another store, and same thing. Well, like a desperate, mad woman I call every single Lancome counter across the Chicagoland area and suburbs and find out that no one had my lotion in stock.

When I called Orland Park mall in Ill., a wonderful sales woman tells me she's going to investigate what happened. I guess she could hear the desperation in my voice. She calls me back and tells me that my lotion has in fact been discontinued in the Midwest area. It is only available in the East Coast. What makes them so lucky?

I believe that I can speak for every skin-sensitive woman out there when I say that I cannot just put on any lotion or cream on my face because I could get irritation. I need time to research a product and make sure that it is oil-free and non-comedogenic, before testing it on myself.

The people of Lancome should know better than to just cancel sales for a particular product. They should be aware of the suffrage skin-senstive women go through. And this is not the first time the company has done this.

I am such a Lancome devotee because I grew up in a household where only those products are used. My grandmother and mother have been using its products for as long as I can remember. That's why I trust this beauty company so much, and have been a customer since I was a pre-teen. I am now in my early 20s.

I am truly dissapointed in Lancome that it would take away a product- a necessity for some women- without posting a sign at least at its counters to warn customers. This has been a true devastation.

A Brazilian Angel

Victoria's Secret supermodel Adriana Lima was at Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg, Ill. last night and yours truly received her autograph.

The line was a little over 300 people long. And the most ignorant, obnoxious group of teenagers were behind me for the two hours I patiently waited to see her. She was scheduled to be there 5 to 7 at night. I arrived at 4 p.m.

First of, it was a mission and a half to get to the mall. I had to take two trains. Then once there, those punks behind me were so rude and loud that even the people in front of me stepped in to my defense, when words were exchanged.

But the moment when I finally made it to Adriana, none of that mattered. Up until the point security tells me- No pictures allowed!- when they saw my camera.

No pictures? No pictures? Did they know what I went through to get there? Apparently not. No pictures? How will I remember this moment?

She signed and handed me an autographed catalogue page of herself. At that moment I thought- I at least have to shake her hand and say something meaningful. So I reached out my hand and said, "Thank you. And congratulations on becoming a mother."

Her gorgeous green eyes opened up so wide and she put her hand to her chest and said, "Aw. Thank you!"

And I smiled.

The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show 2010

Oh la la. The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show 2010 was on CBS last Tuesday, making it the sexiest night on television. Like any fashion show, the season's trends were quite noticeable in the skimpy lingerie outifts. The performing artists throughout the show were Katy Perry and Akon. And it was the beautiful Adriana Lima who opened the show and was the featured angel who wore this year's diamond bra.
The first walk through was called Tough Love. And a tough love theme it was. During this scene, there was a sense of Lady Gaga's fashion style. The models stomped to rock music while wearing large, bold shoulder jackets- one of leather and another of silk chiffon- and towering platform knee-high boots. The outfits also had a rebellious touch to them with studs and spikes embellished on everything- jewelery, shoes, the bras, panties, corsets and even some of the wings.

The second theme was country style, showing off the season's trends of plaid and laced-up boots. The third theme was called Game On. The models came out in sport themed outfits- boxing, soccer, a rhythmic gymnast with the ribbon, football, weight lifting and lacrosse. I absolutely loved this part of the show in particular because there were male gymnasts in the background working on the mushroom doing circles, straddle-ups and back tucks off of them. I did gymnastics for about 11 years, so seeing that be a part of another passion of mine- fashion- was pretty awesome.

In the fourth theme all the models looked so angelic in their wings, wearing nuetral tones made of silk shiffon and lace. As they walked through Akon sang his hit song Angel from his 2010 album Angel. During a television interview for the show, Monica Mitro, EVP Victoria Secret PR, said that this year's show had the biggest number of angel wings because all the models want them. The fifth theme was called Wild Things and the models came out in exotic animal prints, another trend for the season.

And where is the Pink section?- I wondered through out it all. But the producers left it as the grand finale and what a hit it made. PVC outifts were the first to come out in skirts, jackets and an umbrella. Perry sang some of her hit songs while these large ballons of all different colors floated and fell onto the runway. Then bubbles were added. It went perfect with the Pink theme, but did look a bit chaotic as the models walked through the balloons that were starting to overtake the catwalk. And the last model was Chanel Iman. She came out with a bubble gun, adding to the chaos, but it sure did look like fun chaos.

The cheating frenzy

What happened to couples staying committed? To love, honor and cherish has become only words, as the ever growing cycle of cheating has swarmed the media. The ideal couple where a man and a woman stay faithful to each other has seemingly become a fairytale.

It started out as a fantasy for Eva Longoria when she married current NBA player, Tony Parker. She never would of thought that three years later she would find hundreds of sexy text messages back and forth from another ex teammate's wife. Furious with the findings, she then found out about other women who have claimed to have had sexual relationships with Parker. Longoria is currently filing for divorce, and reports say that she doesn't want any of his money.

The current trend of cheating among celebrities has become more and more prevelant in the recent years. Jessee James and Sandra Bullock recently divorced after Bullock discovered a mistress who started coming out of the woodwork. I'm sure you remember when you heard that Tiger Woods cheated on his wife Elin when dozens of women claimed they had an ongoing sexual relationship with Tiger. With Tiger's private life in the media, he admitted himself into a sex rehab program. Along with Tiger, David Letterman has also got involved with several women on his show.

Infidelity is a serious issue in today's world. If you think your partner is cheating check it out, because most often enough you may be right. The statistics show that 70 percent of married women and 54 percent of married men did not know of their partner's cheating.

Although no relationship is perfect, there is no excuse for cheating. The society we live in today glamorizes sex, and makes it okay to cheat. Although forgiveness is a great quality in a person, don't let it get in the way of being true to yourself and your happiness. You've heard the phrase "once a cheater always a cheater," but is it actually true? Surprisingly the statistics say that only 15 to 20 percent of people who cheat do it again. But the cheating continues.

New and Improved?

It's back, it's back! The Aveeno line of shaving gels are back on store shelves!

In August, I posted a blog about Aveeno Active Naturals Positively Smooth Shave Gel being taken off the market with out a proper farewell. I had called their customer service line and was told that they were removed from stores due to a malfunction with the pump. The product was being dispersed as a cream, instead of a gel.

Oh, what difference does it make? Be it a cream or gel, I just need it to get the job done of protecting my legs from nicks and cuts.

Last week, as I was walking through the pampering products aisle at a Wal-Mart store, my jaw dropped when I saw the return of my favorite shaving product. It comes in a new rust-proof can, which is a nice improvement. But honestly, gel or cream, I do not see a difference when using it. I'm just glad it's back.

A few weeks ago, I posted a blog about my favorite moisturizing products for the winter season and asked readers to share their favorites. Well, I have found a new cream that tops any other product I have ever used. I am highly recommending the Lancome Nutrix Royal Body Intense Lipid Repair Cream.

I received the sample bottle- seen above- as a free gift with purchase, a couple of months ago from my local Macy's store. Because the cold weather had not settled in until recently, I barely took the pink champaign colored bottle out of my drawer and did a test run. In a matter of minutes my skin felt amazingly soft and smooth. The rich cream definitely does its job of relieving that tight feeling from dryness, and kept my skin hydrated through out the day. The cream is not greasy, so my skin was still touchable with out an oily residue rubbing off. Also, I instantly noticed my skin, especially my legs, had a natural shine to them. I use the word natural here because the cream does not contian shimmer. And my last observation is its light fragrance, which smells oh-so good and clean. I am awestruck with this product.

I then called the store where I had received this gift and spoke to a Lancome representative and found out that this is not a new product. The representative says that the cream has been on the market for a few years now, though she could not specify what year it debuted.

Tackling The Chef In You

It's time to bring out the pots and pans and make some noise in the kitchen. With Thanksgiving just around the corner, why not dig up your cook books and start the sizzling early. One recipe that will be sure to knock your socks off is a chicken alfredo and rice casserole. Bring your family and friends because this dish will be a success.

All you need for this recipe is:
1 container of light Alfredo pasta sauce
1/2 cup of milk
2 1/2 cups of cooked white rice
2 cups of cubed cooked chicken
1 cup of frozen peas
1/3 cup of chopped red sweet peppers
1 tablespoon of basil
1 cup of soft bread crumbs
1 tablespoon of butter melted

When you have all the ingredients preheat the oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl combine pasta sauce and milk. Stir in rice, chicken, peas, sweet peppers and basil. Then transfer all the contents to a 1 1/2 court baking dish. Put in the oven and bake covered for 30 minutes. After it has baked for 30 minutes, take the dish out of the oven, and combine bread crumbs and melted butter as you sprinkle that on the top as well. Let stand for a couple minutes before serving.

This meal will be sure to leave you and your guests completely full and satisfied. This recipe is not only delicious but healthy as well. A full serving of this appetizing treat is only 456 calories. Longer Lasting Lipstick

Here are four simple steps to prep those pillowy lips, in order to make your lipstick wear last longer through the day.

Step 1: Gently exfoliate your lips. Use your everday face cleanser, and preferably one with exfoliating microbeads. Washing off dry, dead skin is an important step. Lipstick will stain and naturally look better on fresh skin.

Step 2: Pat dry your lips and immediately moisturize them. Moisturized lips retain the lip stain longer, than dry lips. Use your everyday lip moisturizing product or even lotion. Personally, lotion works best because it keeps lips hydrated longer, and the thicker texture works as a fill-in for fine lines on the lips, allowing me to glide on my lipstick smoother.

Step 3: Kiss the back of your hand to remove any excess moisturizer.

Step 4: Now you're ready to smooth on your favorite lipstick shade. Make sure to apply it straight from the tube.

Political Attack Ad Era

You've seen them on TV, and in your mailboxes trying to persuade you to vote for a certain candidate. But how far are political attack ads willing to go to grab a check mark next to their name on a ballot?

Just to give you a sense as to how far a political candidate will go to bash his or her opponent take the Illinois Governor elections for example. Democrat Pat Quinn and Republican runner Bill Brady went head-to-head trying to win voters by attack ads, which can threat voters and make them suspicious or fearful of the targeted runner in the ad. Bill Brady stated recently that he had a lot of attack ads against him. So with Pat Quinn being reelected as governor, could that mean that his means of attack ads worked? Bill Brady insists that something could have gone wrong during the counting.

I'm sure you have already seen this attack ad against Bill Brady. But are the things they are accusing Brady of true?

In the very few seconds of the video you see them attacking Bill Brady for making 76,000 a year and not paying Federal income taxes. After a few seconds of looking up information I found out that Brady didn't owe taxes in 2008 and 2009 because his business had suffered major financial losses from the recession. I have to say that this year's political attack ads against both parties for governor got pretty ugly.

Political attack ads have gotten worse in recent years, and some blame it on the economy. The most vicious attack ad in my opinion was this year. During the weeks leading up to California's GOP gubernatorial primary, candidate Steve Poizner ran an ad accusing Ebay CEO Meg Whitman of promoting pornography. If these ads are false, they can really ruin someone's career and life for that matter.

So next time you see one of those attack ads come on and try to make you think that this candidate is wrong for the job, do your own research? You would be surprised at how many people think what is said is on TV is true. First of all you don't know who is producing these attack ads, and often times they get taken off the air because they are completely and utterly false. Don't let political attack ads fool you.

Vaseline's 140th Anniversary

The how-you-doing host Wendy Williams, from- obviously- The Wendy Williams Show, celebrated Vaseline's 140th anniversary this week during her show. She involved the audience by quizzing them on the different ways to use the petroleum jelly product for your skin, your baby's skin and even corky ways to use around the house, such as to silence noisy door hinges. It was quite obvious that the audience studied for the quiz, because they were getting all the answers right!

During one of the questions, I learned something new. Mix sea salt and Vaseline, and use it as an exfoliating scrub to remove and smooth rough skin. Remember to exfoliate dry areas, such as elbows, knees, heels and even hands, gently! I was too excited to use this new inexpensive scrub I conjured up over my bathroom sink that I scrubbed a little too hard. Ouch! But it did the trick! After washing off the scrub, my skin felt amazingly soft and supple as a new born's.

Here's some historical information on the product from its website at http://www.vaseline.com/. Robert A. Chesebrough is the father of Vaseline. In 1859, when he was a 22-year-old, he journied to Pennsylvania to study an oil well. While there he noticed that the oil workers used this thick, natural substance, known as Rod Wax, to aid in the healing of cuts and scrapes; as Vaseline does. He went back to his home in Brooklyn, NY with a sample of the wax. After expirementing, he came up with the product that we use today. In 1870, the name Vaseline was marketed and made its way into homes, nationally and internationally, during the following decade.

Vaseline can be found at any drug store in the medicine aisle. I found my 3.75 oz jar at my local Walgreens for $2.99.

Celebrity Halloween Hits

It's not every day you get to dress up as your favorite celebrity let alone look like them. This year the celebrity Halloween award goes to reality star Snooki, and second place not far behind is musician Lady Gaga.

With dozens of poofs, and many meat dresses strolling the street across the nation on Oct 31., this makes Lady Gaga and Snooki as the celebrity Halloween hits for this year.

Although every Halloween you always have your Elvis, Michael Jackson and Marylin Monroe costumes, there was a variety of new celebrity Halloween costume ideas. From legendary Betty White, Tiger Woods cheating scandal, pop sensation Justin Bieber to President Barak Obama, this year was a fun time to think outside the box.

The best celebrity couple costumes this year was by far the now broken up Kim Kardashian and Reggie Bush. Many rocked their style by adding a little junk in their trunk and sporting a New Orleans Saints jersey. Also another popular celebrity couple costume was Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.

As for the little ones, there was plenty of costumes for them to wear this year. From being their favorite super hero to their favorite character in a book, the kids can't wait till next Halloween. The new thing this year for infants and toddlers was to make their costumes into little bumble bees or fairies.

Always remember to be safe on Halloween especially if you're taking your little ones trick -or- treating. Never let your kids out of your sight, and walk them up to the door, or be somewhere where you can see them at all times like maybe a sidewalk for example. Halloween is a fun holiday to dress up and to indulge in chocolate or sugar treats.

A Show from Chicago's Fashion Week

If you blinked at Thursday night's Fashion Focus Chicago 2010 fashion show, then you probably missed all the stomping catwalk action from the local, top student designers from the city. The show was held in a heated tent located at Millenium Park, and was scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Personally knowing the chaotic madness that goes on backstage with hair, makeup and last minute designer issues, it was no surprise to see the spotlight shine on cue 10 minutes behind schedule. Definitely worth the wait I must say.

The top 24 design students of Columbia College Chicago, The Illinois Institue of Art- Chicago, The International Academy of Design and Technology- Chicago and the School of The Art Institute of Chicago displayed their talented fashion creativity in 40 minutes. The winner of the Chicago History Museum's FashionNext Generation competition was Brenda Beavers of The Illinois Insitute of Art- Chicago.

Here is Beavers walking in the finale with a model sporting her look. Beavers designed head ornaments that were placed to either the upper left or right side of the hair. The materials used looked like polyester and net assembled together to form an abstract flower shape. The models wore light gold champaign-colored, spaghetti strap and halter top dresses of what looks like rayon material, that hugged the upper body with the hemline grazing above the thigh.

Overall, half of the designs looked ready-to-wear, while some of the other creations simply brought amusement to the crowd's faces. Though, it is the amusing attire which seems to stick in my mind more than the wearable outfits. What stood out the most as far as amusing was by student designer Claudia Macias from the Illinois Institute of Art- Chicago. Her theme looked street inspired. The models walked barefoot and wore very grungy and dirty looking attire. A model wore a square-block strapless top made of newspapers and another model wore a brown wool, off-the-shoulder top with a skirt made of the red inked THANK YOU plastic bags. Michael Schellenbach, also from the same school as Macias, sent out a male model who carefully and skillfully walked down the runway wearing an army green jumpsuit with the pant leg connected to the shoes. This was the best part. The sole of the shoe was the rounded part to an inflated car tire. Alexandre Chandoa of the International Academy of Design and Technology created very unwearable oufits. His designs looked inspired from wooden barrels. Three models sported wooden boards as a top and an angled skirt.

But the rest of the show displayed wearable clothes that shadows exactly what is in for this fall season and past inspirations from the 90s. Velvet made a come back and an essence of Alexander McQueen's 1995 Highland Rape show was demonstrated by a shredded men's suit and women's dress by Katie King of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In general though, lots of silk chiffon was used for dresses in lilac reaching knee-length and formal lengths, there was also lots of wool fabrics mixed in with leather; nothing we haven't already seen fom international designers that have been previewed in the August and September issues of Allure and Vogue magazines.

HCG Controversial Diet

The new controversial diet HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin), is a hormone naturally produced in the placenta by pregnant women. The diet calls for you to inject yourself or take diet drops that contain a hormone that causes your hypothalamus to mobilize the fat out of the fat storage locations so that you can use it.

For the first two days of the diet you are told to consume as much sweets and carbs as possible, then after that you can only eat 500 calories a day for a month, where you are expected to lose one to two pounds per day.

Before researching this diet I was very skeptical, but now I can say that the diet seems safe, although there are always risks associated with rapid weight loss. While recently finding out that my best friends mom has had complete success with the diet, I was curious to find out what others had to say.

After reading many health blogs and health reviews, many people are feeling better and losing weight after trying the diet. At the same time the hormone is mobilizing your stored fat, it is also burning 3,00 to 4,500 calories a day. The injections are a bit pricier than the drops costing $700 while the drops cost only $149. Talk to your doctor about whether this diet is right for you.

T.I. saves a life

Rapper T.I. also known as Clifford Harris lends a helping hand to a vulnerable man who threatened to jump off a 22- story building in Atlanta. When T.I. heard word of this on the city's radio show he rushed over to help, and try to talk this man out of committing suicide.

T.I. knows all too well about the struggles of life with his recent drug suspicion charges last month, and gave the man some words of advice. "No matter what's going on in your life things will get better if you allow them to," said T.I..

Life can be very difficult at times, and I think what T.I. did was very brave and admirable. Celebrities are often idealized as people who have more say so than an average person, but T.I. proved that he was just like anyone else who was helping someone in need.

With our busy lives people often forget the simplest things and that is to help someone who is struggling and just needs a helping hand. There have been many suicides in recent months of people who were victims of bullying because of the way they looked, dressed or acted. If you see someone who needs your help, don't hesitate to give them a couple minutes out of your life, because it could save their life.

Lotioning and Oiling

Whenever I walk into a drug store, I always gravitate towards the aisle with the oceans of lotions bottled up by numerous brands. I don't just see lotion products for sale, but mystical potions just waiting to be slathered on to quench dry skin from the cold wind's beating. Though I hesitate to purchase a different lotion that I normally use, due to an itchy, allergic experience I once had with Olay's Quench Daily Lotion Plus Shimmer.

My secret potion for keeping my skin silky smooth and supple through the fall and winter months is a mixture of Jergens Ultra Healing body lotion and Desert Essence 100% Pure Jojoba Oil from Trader Joe's grocery stores.

Horrific Medical Experiment Uncovered

Nearly six decades after the medical experiment began, shocking results have been found. The U.S. just released a formal apology for purposely infecting hundreds of unwilling Guatemalans with syphilis and gonorrhea between 1946 and 1948.

The medical experiment was conducted to report the effects of the diseases and how it affects humans. In total 696 men and women were affected through intercourse with prostitutes where the disease was put on their arms, face and penises. Guatemalan prisoners, mental health patients and soldiers were used in the experiment. Questions arise to how many people knew they were being conducted in a study of these two diseases.

If you aren't aware of these diseases here is a quick overview of what can happen if left untreated. After becoming infected by syphilis there is a period of between 9 to 90 days where there aren't any symptoms. Then the primary stage occurs where you get a canker sore on various parts of your genital areas. If left untreated it may move into a rash where you feel weak and tired. During the final stage it begins to infect the organs which may include non healing skin ulcers, bone pain, liver disease and anemia.

And not only were these Guatemalans infected with a very harmful disease, but were purposely infected with another disease that is formally known as gonorrhea. The incubation period where gonorrhea starts affecting a person is one to 14 days. The health effects of gonorrhea occur differently in men and women. In women if left untreated can cause pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, ectopic pregnancy and pelvic pain. In men it can cause painful inflammation of the testicles which may result in infertility.

Its wrong that these scientists and doctors got away with this for so long. To treat a race of people like lab rats is utterly and morbidly wrong to say the least. Guatemalans during that time were looked at to be at the lower end of the race scale as being closer to animals than humans. To be purposely infected with two very dangerous diseases is inhumane. If you are a part of something that involves potentially harming someones health or harming them in general think for a second if that were to be done to you or someone in your family.

Oh Vinny...

Last Saturday, September 25, 2010 Vinny from Jersey Shore "hosted" a party at Republic Nightclub. It's located at 1520 N. Fremont, Chicago, IL 60622. Yours truly went to this shin dig to party with the Italian stallion and to come back and report the drunken details to those that couldn't make it.

I arrived in my killer stilettos around 11:30ish p.m. and was feeling a bit inpatient of when he was to show, since the night was supposed to be hosted by him. But celebrities, what can you do?

Here is monsieur Vinny making his entrance around 1:30 a.m. The sexy, sweaty half-dressed crowd squished their way to the floor to see him as he appeared on stage surrounded by body guards.

In my opinion, Vinny didn't do any "hosting" that night. All he did was go on stage and introduce himself.

"Hi, I'm Vinny from the MTV show Jersey Shore," he said to the crowd while holding a microphone. He looked a bit nervous- to be honest- and didn't sound too confident when speaking into the mike.

Then! All of a sudden! A bouncer announced that he was to take pictures with fans and all the ladies in the club went running to the side of the stage! It was a stampede of pushy women that I did get caught up in for the sole purpose of this blog. I too ran and pushed my way through the chaotic crowd of women and their eagerness to get a close glimpse of dear Vinny. It was all in the name of journalism for my purposes. But, unfortunately, I never reached the front of the line to get a personal picture with him. But I elbowed my way close enough to get a close up of him. Here he is on stage with a girl that is not me, but he sure is looking straight at my camera! Enjoy fans of Vinny!

Beware of What You Eat

Have you ever wondered what chemicals are used in food? There are seven deadly chemicals used in processed food. They raise high health concerns to people of all ages. Here are three that I think cause the most risks.

FD&C Red Dye # 3 is a red cherry dye derived from coal tar. Researchers in 1981 found that this chemical can interfere with the transmission of nerve impulses in the brain. Since then the dye has been banned from cosmetics, but is still put in processed food.

Do you ever eat cereal, potato chips, or gum? What if I were to tell you that in those products they contain harmful amounts of BHA (Butylated Hydroxyanisole), which is a preservative to keep food from going bad. Although it is preserving the food, once it hits your body it accumulates in the body fat and disrupts the hormone balance with higher or lower levels of estrogen or progesterone. Studies have shown that mice, rats and hamsters have developed cancer from this preservative, but it is kept on the shelves.

Commonly called Sodium Benzoate or Benzoic Acid is a preservative widely used in fruit juice, carbonated drinks and pickles. The problem with this preservative is when it is used in beverages that contain ascorbic acid (Vitamin C.) These two substances can react together to form an acidic solution that forms small amounts of Benzene that is a chemical that causes Leukemia and other cancers. There have been restrictions made on Sodium Benzoate, bt it is still used in some products.

When I go grocery shopping, I rarely look at the label to see what's in it. I grab healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables. It's a scary thought that on a daily basis we are contaminating our bodies with these foods that is full of chemical impurities. Who knows how many chemicals are allowed in processed food before it is deemed a health risk. These chemicals are clearly harmful. So be on the lookout for any of these three chemicals.

How has Facebook affected your life? Did the infamous social, networking media bring you fame? Happiness? Sadness? Surprises, good or bad? Did it change your social or work life; maybe both? Have you gained or lost "friends"? I gained a few unexpected people I really thought I would never meet.

I joined facebook about two years ago only because my friends kept bugging me about it. A few months after that I recieved an unexpected, would have never imagined it friend request. It was my younger half-brother, whom I had never met. He lives in Indianapolis, IN with my other younger half-brother, half-sister, their mother and with the father I hadn't met in all my life. Soon afterwards, my other little brother sent me his friend request. It's a long story and when the editors gave me this blogging gig, I was told to write 150 words in length, so I'll keep it short and sweet. My brothers and I chatted quite often for the following year and decided to finally meet this past summer. So we did and it was awesome. Once they went back home to Indiana, my brothers planned and set up a surprise meeting for our father and I to meet and exchange hello's for the first time ever. Oh my gosh was it a surprise! They had all came to town for a family wedding and that's when it happened.

So if it weren't for facebook, I honestly believe I wouldn't have met my brothers nor the man that I'm told I look like. Maybe we would have in the far, far future, but who knows? So thank you Facebook.

Living Yoga

Two years ago yoga changed my life. I decided to take a class in yoga that took place twice a week. Right away I noticed a difference in my body. Before I started practicing yoga I suffered from severe migraines, and meditating along with the different poses helped me to relieve the pressure that I held in my head.

Yoga is all about understanding your body, and living in the present. Just taking 10 minutes a day to focus on your breathing, and noticing your body while you're breathing is another way to calm the mind during stressful days.

Before I started practicing yoga I noticed how much I lived in the future, and how I was always worried about bills I had to pay or things I had to get done. Living in the future not only made life stressful, and more complicated, but there was no room to enjoy life in the now. Yoga poses are designed so that you feel your body stretch and breathe into them. My yoga teacher explained to me that when you realize most of your worries come from things you have no control over that you can take a deep breath and let things happen.

Yoga has a lot of benefits including increasing your flexibility, massaging of your organs, and it can also help you sleep, and become relaxed. Yoga has been around for centuries since the 6th century B.C., where they primary use for yoga was through meditation. Yoga is a way of life, and it teaches the importance of loving your body, and taking care of yourself.

Promises Lies And Sexual Slavery

Dreams, ambitions and happiness are just a couple words to describe young girls everywhere who think of their future. One 15-year-old girl in Mexico was full of life, and wanted to build a successful life with a job in America.

She was determined, and put her trust in a boy who later became her boyfriend who was full of promises and hopes of bringing her to America and getting her a job. Never did she think that her dreams would become her worst nightmare.

He invited her to join him to work at a clothes factory in New York City. After being smuggled into the U.S., her voice was silenced as she was forced into sexual slavery. The guy she trusted beat her, burned her with cigarettes, threatened to kill her parents in Mexico. With no one to trust, no family and friends, she was left feeling lost, hurt and alone. Trying to get back on her feet, she thought of ways of escaping, and asked where bus and train stations were. She saved up money, and hid it in the refrigerator. With determination still in her heart, she went to a nearby bus station, and bought a ticket to a city she didn't know. She has been free ever since, but suffers from nightmares, and is forever scarred.

Living and working as a prostitute became her reality filled with false promises, physical, mental and sexual abuse. Unlike her story, thousands of other girls are still living this horrendous horror. People need to come together, and make it aware that this is happening everywhere in the United States. Parents especially, need to step up and let their kids know that this world has its dark sides. You are not protecting your child if you don't tell them about sexual slavery, because one is better off knowing than not knowing.

Each year about 1,000 American-born children are forced into the sex trade industry, while nationwide there are between 45,000 and 50,000 people trafficked into the United States according to a 2001 report from the U.S. States Department. Do your part, do research, and educate young girls and boys about what sexual slavery is, and what it can do to a person.

Hurry, Hurry You Dirty Girl

Gross, I know, but I didn’t have time to wash my hair or style it! What is a busy girl to do in order to get out of such a pickle?

Last week’s beauty blog was about teasing the hair to get va-voom volume. If you’re pressed with time, but need to have good, not just presentable hair, dry shampoo is the secret weapon. Not only will its formula soak up the oiliness, adding volume, but also kill that smelly hair smell.

This was my first dry shampoo experience. While doing online research for where and which dry shampoo to buy, I discovered quite a few different brands out in the market. Being the Allure magazine devotee that I am, I went out to my local Walgreens store and bought the one they recommend, Pssssst! Instant Dry Shampoo for $5.99! I couldn't pass up that bargain after the prices I found during my research.

The product comes in a can and is sprayed onto the hair as one would with hair spray. Just as the directions on the back of the can say, spray the hair where it needs help. I sprayed around the hair line, around the top and in-between sections and bam! My hair was oil-free, shiny and full of body and volume. A major plus that won me over was how good my hair smelled and lasted throughout my busy day.

What a Tease

Don’t move. Hold it just right there. Gently put down the blow dryer, the flat iron and –dare I say- the brush. Well, maybe not the brush…that will be used for some teasing later.

I was super excited to read in the August issue of Allure magazine that poufy, almost punk a la Brigitte Bardot hair is the new trend for this fall season. So ladies, if you have thick, coarse, frizzy, curly, wavy or anything but perfectly, pin-straight hair then you’re in luck. You’re more than halfway to achieving this hair ‘do.

Because I’m a huge fan of this va-voom hairstyle, and actually style my hair like this for nights out in the town, here are my very own instructions to getting this fun look.

You will need a toothcomb, a wooden brush, volumizing hairspray, and Velcro rollers varying in size. Begin with clean, dry hair. The hair can be part down the middle or to the side, whatever your choice. Next, will be the teasing of the hair around the crown of the head. Grab hair from the upper section and hold it up, then mist some hairspray. (Note: gently mist, not spray. The hair should not get wet or soaked with the hair spray.) Keep the hair taught, and run the toothcomb in downward motions from the middle length of the hair to the root, making sure that you see and feel hair scrunched up.

To secure and add more teasing volume, gently mist more hairspray and use the wooden brush the same as the toothcomb. Once you finish teasing place the Velcro roller under the hair. This works by holding up the hair to give it shape.

Continue to the next sections of the hair. When finished, leave the rollers in for about ten minutes, then remove and enjoy your sexy new look.

Jersey Shore has been MTV’s hit reality show for one season so far, and is gathering audiences everywhere on its current second season. Some might be distraught or upset over the fact that this show is not only one of a few Italian shows, but that it also adds to the constant stereotyping that Italians are all loud, obnoxious and party animals.

After watching a couple episodes of the second season I wonder what all the hype is about. These people aren’t doing anything but partying and drinking while gaining fame, publicity and money. They are constantly in the media outside their reality show. For example, Nicole Polizzi aka Snookie, a cast member on Jersey Shore, was arrested a couple weeks ago for public drunkenness, and the media coverage was all over the story. Many media outlets wanted to be the first ones to get a glimpse of the reality star’s mug shots.

These reality stars don't demonstrate any talent on the show, and you never see them doing any type of work besides cooking after a long night out partying, or picking out their next club outfit. What is this world coming to with pointless reality shows like Jersey Shore? I would rather be watching something that is more entertaining and educating than watching a house full of Italians go out and party all night

When there is only a couple of shows that display Italians, don’t you think a show would be a little more cautious about how they portray any race? It’s what people want to hear and see, which makes them think that these stereotypes of Italians are true. All we need in this world is cast members from the Jersey Shore to make money by portraying themselves in Italian stereotypes. Be mindful of what you watch, because the media is full of false images or messages referring to race, gender ethnicity, and religion.

Lindsey Lohan: A media obsession

It seems that Lindsey Lohan is enjoying being a free woman these days after she was released from jail then rehab, when she didn’t serve the full term of either sentence. It seems that if you have power, money or fame you don’t have to serve full sentences in the United States. It’s unjust and wrong that the legal system works this way.

The media has covered every legal process that she has gone through to see if she makes a wrong move. Enough already with the media covering what going on in her life after rehab. No one cares anymore!

Lohan has been in trouble with the police many times before and has gotten off. In 2007 she violated her parole agreement stemming from her two DUI arrests. Under the terms of her plea agreement she was to attend an alcohol awareness meeting weekly, which she violated. Also, Lohan is infamous for showing up hours late to court. If regular everyday people can't get away with this nonsense, then why can she?

Other celebrities who have gotten away with the law because of who they were and what they had in their bank account include pop singer Brandy who caused a fatal car crash in 2006 that resulted in the death of a woman. Vehicular manslaughter charges were never filed against her. A case similar to Brandy's involved a 48-year-old man from Idaho who caused a car crash that resulted with four deaths, and was charged with four accounts of Vehicular Manslaughter. Just because his accident resulted in more deaths doesn't justify that Brandy didn't get charged at all for the same crime.

People need to realize that just because you have a house in the Hamptons or your name appears on Billboards, the law is the law, and everyone should have to pay the price for their wrong doing. But for now if you have power, money and fame you can get away with almost anything.

Jimmy Fallon: Host of the 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards

Last Sunday night was the 62^nd Primetime Emmy Awards and the only thing the media has crazed about was the fashion hits and blunders. No one has really commented on the comedic performances from the host, the hilarious, Jimmy Fallon.

From singing farewell songs for the ended shows 24, Law and Order, and Lost, while dressed as Elton John and lead singer of Green Day to hugging actor Tom Selleck, claiming him as his “real father,” Fallon had the crowd rolling every time he came out.

Now I have four letters for you: G.T.L.E. Gym. Tan. Laundry. Emmys. Fallon said this was the order in which he got ready to head off to his hosting gig. He did look more tanned than usual; very Hollywood of him.

His opening act for the show involved the acting cast from Glee. Fallon did a high-energy guitar performance, where he was completely out of breath while singing. Even though I couldn’t make out what he was saying, it just made it more comedic. And for the finale, Fallon ended the show on a high-note by popping a bottle of champagne and announcing the after-party at Betty White's crib.

As I sit here and blog, I continue to look down and glance at my stubby legs. "What am I going to do about this?" I think. Shave, possibly? Yes, but my favorite, numero uno shaving product is no where to be found! I have frantically gone to my local Wal-Marts and Targets and nothing.

Have you ever been faithfully devoted to a beauty product and all of a sudden without fair warning, it is discontinued?

Going back to my shaving dilemma, as a devoted customer, I called the 800 number on the back of my empty shaving can- no I have not thrown it out yet- and spoke with "Information Specailist" Tracy. Due to employee policy, she could not give out her full name. Tracy informed me that the Aveeno Active Naturals shave gels have been temporarily removed from store shelves due to a malfunction with the pump.

The pumps are dispersing the product as a cream, rather than a gel, hence the name "shave gel." I did notice this happening in the shower.

Tracy continued on by telling me that the line of shave gels will be back on the market, hopefully, by the end of this year. Whoop-dee-doo. Now I know what to put on my wish list for Santa Claus.

Throw Out the Pain...Keep the Lesson

Over the weekend I posed a question to a friend. "What would you tell the 16-year-old you?"

Would you advise 16 year old you to steer clear of that guy sitting behind you in Algebra? Would you tell him/her to focus on a specific career? Or maybe you could warn him/her that what they are doing at that EXACT moment will forever impact their life.

My friend's responses were reflective and humorous at best; however, the sadness that laced her tone when speaking of regret stunned me.

The reality is that some people are stuck in the murk and mire of their past. You can't change it, but you should committ to learn from it. Incessant reprimanding over things you could have done differently leave you looking in the rearview mirror of life and eventually you will crash.

I encouraged my friend, as I'm doing you, to write a letter to the wounded child in you. Let them know that it's okay now and healing can begin. Tell them that the experiences they had, helped create the person you are today. Allow yourself a chance at true happiness by throwing out the pain and keeping the lessons.

What drives a mom to kill her children?

Everyone is struggling with the effects of the shaky economy, but one South Carolina mother Shaquan Duley couldn't deal with the struggles of being a parent, and took the lives of her toddlers who were 1 and 2 years old.

Duley is facing two counts of murder after police say she she killed her own two children. Authorities said Duley suffocated both of her toddlers before strapping them into car seats, and submerging the car into a river. There is speculation that Duley's mother had argued over and over again about her not knowing how to be a parent.

How could someone who has given birth to two children kill them and drown them in a river? From the information I have read, and from statements family members have said, she was a ticking time bomb. If family members knew she had issues raising children, why didn't they step in before these children had to tragically suffer and die?

According to the American Anthropological Association, more than 200 women kill their children in the United States each year. Three to five children a day are killed by their parents. So the question is why do they do it, and what makes them commit one of the most heinous crimes a person can commit?

Medical Anthropologist Nancy Hughes says in one of her articles that we should "Detach from the idea that motherhood is universal or natural, and see it as a social response." She also goes on to discuss how mothers who kill their children aren't as rare as we make it seem.

Mothers who kill their children tend to fall into five categories according to Meyer's research on dozens of cases: killing of a newborn, killing through abuse, being assisted or coerced by a partner, killing purposely and killing through neglect.

In 1996, 33-year-old Susan Eubanks of California shot her four sons 4,6,7 and 14, in the head. The day started out when Eubanks and her boyfriend began drinking. As they drank more and more the arguments began. She became so outraged with him that she slashed his tires, and locked him out of their home. Eubanks' boyfriend called the police to have them escort him to the home. After he left Eubanks lost control of her mind and body, and the catalysts of killings occurred. Eubanks and her boyfriend had a history of a violent relationship, and things kept getting worse. Finally when she could take no more she lost control, and lost everything.

If you or someone you know is dealing with the constant pressures and demands of life, be there for them and let them know they have support. Often times when people have support and love from friends or family, they won't have to take drastic measures and put themselves or someone else at risk.

You attend a much-needed Relationship Seminar. Ruckus enters the room in the form of two women with children in tow. The speaker then announces that due to the presence of the children, he must censor his topics.

You throw major attitude towards the children; however, your anger is misdirected. The kids don't want to be there either, but the babysitter wasn't available and 'Mama needs to be out'.

Our children are being exposed to too much!

Let's return to the days when children weren't allowed to be in the same room as adults. The days when children were sent to the basement with food, board games and movies as the adults conversed and played cards on Saturday nights.

Overexposure at this rate could lead to a peak in teenage violence and sexual nuances....Oh wait, we're already there!

America's oil disaster

America's worst environmental disaster is wreaking havoc on the Marine wildlife in the Gulf Coast, and many are worried that after the oil is cleared up the long term effects could prove to be ever so frightening.

A government report released a week ago stated that 75 percent of the oil that gushed into the Gulf of New Mexico has been collected. According to the head of the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration, the oil is being degraded and cleaned up on shore. There is a lot of damage below the surface that we can't see, and no one knows if the marine wildlife will ever be the same. BP has taken responsibility for their actions, but the cost for this disaster is having harmful effects on the already shaky economy.

Two hundred and sixty million gallons of oil has proven to be America's worst nightmare, and the local ecosystem and fishing communities still haven't recovered. The U.S. has just recently opened around 9 percent of the Gulf of Mexico's fishing areas closed by the BP Oil Company saying the seafood is safe to eat. Many tests were given to insure this.

The seafood industry is feeling the effects of this crisis as the seafood production is down 60 percent from last year. You can help out by simply going online to a variety of websites no-hunger.org, and ccstb.org to those affected by the oil spill, and you can also sign up to volunteer online or by phone to help with the cleanup efforts.

Leonardo DiCaprio's road to success

The Sci-Fi blockbuster hit "Inception" is catching movie-goers all around the world. Leonardo DiCaprio stars in the Sci-Fi thriller playing an espionage expert who has a highly specialized way of stealing corporate secrets, which involves extracting them from within the dreams of his targets. The opening of the movie goes on the list for being DiCaprio's biggest opening movie yet, topping "Titanic" in 1997.

Let's go back many years to explore the man behind the screen who went on to achieve much triumph. When the movie Titanic came out in 1997 women fell in love with DiCaprio's personality and his sheer good looks, but movie critics had the opposite opinion: they claimed his role in "Titanic" was anything but talent. Throughout the years after Titanic DiCaprio would prove them wrong.

DiCaprio's opportunity for a comeback came in 2002 when he starred in the movie "Gangs of New York," which was set amidst urban uprisings, and the 1863 Civil War Draft Riots. His role captures the violence and the character of a young Irish American who sees his father, the leader of an Irish immigrant street gang, get killed in a street brawl. Critics everywhere applauded DiCaprio's role in the movie. Many were stunned by his performance and would be stunned again and again.

DiCaprio tested his skill and talent in the movie "The Aviator," which required him to jump from one extreme emotion to the other. His performance in this film was highly praised as he played the eccentric Howard Hughes, which depicts the early years of the legendary director and aviator's career.

DiCaprio went on to make many more films including "Blood Diamond" in 2006, "Revolutionary Road" in 2008, and his latest film "Inception" is wowing audiences everywhere. His career has had some ups and downs, but he has always come out on top. If you haven't seen Inception, you might be in for a mind-bending roller coaster.

Phone jailbreaking made legal

Owners of Iphones along with other smart phone users can now legally jailbreak their phone due to a recent government ruling. The controversial practice of jailbreaking has been an issue with many phone companies, and Apple along with other companies fought hard against legalizing jailbreaking, but as of July 26, it is now legal.

Jailbreaking is the practice of unlocking a phone so it can be used on another network or run other applications other than the network it belongs to. Jailbreaking has been illegal for years, but with the legalization this will bring many benefits for smart phone users.

I don't see what the controversy of jailbreaking is because it gives cellphone users choices and benefits, but Apple argues that it was a form of copyright violation. Not only are you getting applications for free by jailbreaking, but you get many options for what phone you want along with what service provider best fits you.

When jailbreaking was illegal Apple announced that one million Iphones users have jailbroken their handsets. So either way it's going to happen.

Even though many cell phone providers are not happy with the ruling, I think this is a celebration for many smart phone users. Now smart phone users can breathe easier knowing that there won't be any legal penalties for jailbreaking.

June: Hottest Month Ever Worldwide

According to reports released by National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), June was the hottest month ever recorded worldwide, since temperatures readings have been recorded.

The heat waves hit close to home in America as many people noticed much warmer temperatures during the latter part of June. In Albuquerque, New Mexico temperatures rose about 10 to 15 degrees above average. Many cities across New Mexico reached above the 110 degree mark.

As for the month of July, weather forecasters have said we will be cooling down, because of cooler waters around the Equator which will lower temperatures on land.

But there are always precautions to make when the summer heat hits. Whether you work inside or outside make sure to drink plenty of liquids all day long, preferably water. Wear light clothing, and try to stay in the shade if you can. Always put on sun-screen, because many of us have had at least one painful sunburn and know how much it hurts. Putting on sunscreen is essential to protecting you from the sun's harmful UV rays. Not everyone has an air conditioner they can enjoy during the summer, so if you don't make sure to have plenty of air circulation, and buy a fan. The elderly need to be especially careful in the heat because they are more at risk for having heat strokes.

If you have to be out in the heat, make sure to take precautions. If not, enjoy the air conditioning. The heat is hard on people of all ages, and proper precautions could save you a trip to the ER because of a preventable heat stroke.

Mel Gibson Madness

Rumors have circulated that Mel Gibson would flee the country after much media buzz has been surrounding him after his ex girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva leaked tapes of Gibson screaming at her and threatening to burn down the house along with other hostile language.

Gibson will have to reconsider leaving the country and fleeing to his home town of Australia because he is now subject to a domestic violence investigation. Other reports have said this to be false, and that Gibson is not leaving the country and is focusing on work.

The evidence that Grigorieva has gathered against Gibson in regards to the recordings won’t change the direction of the case, because in the state of California live recordings are admissible in court unless the person is not told that they’re being recorded. Mel reportedly had no idea that he was being recorded.

Regardless of whether he was told or not that he was being recorded, he should be held accountable for his actions. Though the laws in California will dismiss the evidence I believe that Grigorieva shouldn’t stop there. There are also other reports of Gibson admitting on one of the tapes that he hit their child. If this were to be true, would the courts still dismiss that evidence?

When it comes to a child in any violent situation, I think there should be quick action taken to keep that child safe. There are still custody battles between Gibson and Grigorieva, but Gibson is still allowed visitation rights. It has been said that if you have power, money and fame that you could do anything and get away with anything. I hope this is not true in Mel Gibson's case, because he is clearly a disturbed man who needs medical and psychiatric evaluation.

Lindsay Lohan Sentence A Joke

Last month 24-year-old Lindsay Lohan was sentenced to 90 days of jail time for violating her probation by missing alcohol education classes that a court ordered her to take. So Tuesday, the actress surrendered herself to a court and was taken to the Century Regional Retention Facility in Lynwood to start her sentence of, get this, not 90 days, but two weeks. The reason? Overcrowding at the jail. To add to the mockery, Lohan will have her own cell, in seclusion from the rest of the general population.

Here's a little more about the three-year probation Lohan violated. First there was the arrest on Memorial Day weekend in 2007 for a hit-and-run crash; then there was the arrest two months later for leading a chase in an SUV. In August 2007, she pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor counts of being under the influence of cocaine; no contest to two counts of driving with a blood alcohol level over 0.08 and one count of reckless driving.

So she was sentenced to three years probation and still can't get it right. And to punish her and teach her a lesson she will serve only 14 days? Something's familiar here. That same isolated 12x8 cell that Lohan will have to put up with for two weeks was also inhabited by Paris Hilton ... for a lot shorter stay. In fact, the cell isn't the only thing the two celebrities have in common. Hilton's legal troubles were almost identical to Lohan's.

In September 2006, "The Simple Life" star was arrested on charges of drunk driving. In January 2007, she was sentenced to three years probation which she also later violated.

On Sunday, June 3, 2007, Hilton started what should have been a 45-day sentence. Instead, she walked out five days later on that Thursday. Why? "Medical considerations." From what I recall, her doctor was concerned because Hilton was "depressed" due to her circumstances. So she served the rest of her "sentence" at home wearing a monitoring bracelet. Okay. No one is doing cartwheels in jail. It's jail. It's not the Four Seasons!

I dare say that there is an obvious pattern. It seems that if you are wealthy, famous, and used to getting whatever you want on a whim, you shouldn't serve time in jail - at least not for any significant amount of time. It seems that this applies whether or not you drive drunk, engage in life-endangering high speed chases, snort cocaine, drive on a suspended license and violate court-ordered mandates.

What about a "regular" person? Do you think he/she will have to sit out the full sentence in jail? I think they will. Do you think that if he/she were to become depressed because jail just plain and simple SUCKS, he/she would be freed due to "medical considerations"? I think not. And can you imagine an inmate being secluded from the general population just because? I can't.

It's a joke. If celebrities have the gumption to do drugs, drive drunk, endanger lives repeatedly, they should have the gumption to serve the time. They are human like we all are. The only difference is that the world does not know the "regular" person; the regular person isn't popular, "attractive", wealthy or spoiled. That's it!! I guess Lohan can't separate fact from fiction, nor can the people swooning around these celebrities waiting on them hand and foot. This isn't "Mean Girls". This is real life and Life has consequences. So for goodness sakes, grow up, do your time, and get over it.

You've made your bed. Lie in it.

Health discovery may be answer to HIV vaccine

Researchers and scientists from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious diseases say they have found three human antibodies that neutralize more than 90 percent of the current HIV-1 strands.

In order to find three human antibodies, doctors had to find someone who had a good immune response against the virus that causes AIDS. It's very rare to find someone who has a good immune response, but now they have found one.

This is astonishing to me that there is a good chance that researchers have found a vaccine to cure HIV/AIDS. This virus is the worlds leading infectious killer according to the World Health Organization. An estimated 2 million people are living with AIDS in America and the numbers keep rising. Around the world there are 33 million people living with the virus, and among many cities and countries around the world India has had the most AIDS cases with 5.7 million.

There are many circulating myths of how HIV evolved, and how it became the deadly pandemic of today. The virus has stunned doctors, scientists, and researchers all over the world raising questions of its origin and how it affects people. HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) attacks the immune system, but its harmful affects happen slowly, so many people who could have it won't show any symptoms in some cases, years after they have it according to research. It is now generally accepted that HIV came from SIV (Simian Immunodeficiency Virus) found in monkeys of west Africa. These viruses could have crossed species over to humans, but there is much debate over how exactly humans contracted HIV.

The next step after finding these three HIV antibodies is to put them to the test, and make sure other people who aren't infected other than the ones who are can create those same antibodies. The ultimate goal is to produce a mass amount of antibodies to wipe out Aids completely in the future.

The number of people living with AIDS has increased dramatically from 8 million in 1990 to 33 million today. This health discovery of three vital antibodies may be hope for many who are struggling everyday for a life because of HIV.

Cavaliers owner gets heated when Lebron signs with the Heat

Though it was a tough decision for Lebron about which team he would choose between five other choices, his decision was finally set on Miami. He announced his decision on a televised sports special from the Boys and Girls Club in Greenwich, Conn.

Though it was a happy day for Lebron James, I can't say the same for Cavaliers' owner Dan Gilbert. After hearing news that Lebron chose Miami, Gilbert expressed his feelings about Lebron's decision by saying that "This was announced with a several day, narcissistic, self-promotional, build up culminating with a national TV special of his decision." Gilbert goes on to say that Lebron is bringing the curse with him to Miami Heat.

Dan Gilbert is only worried about championships, and his words will definitely come back to haunt him. It's unprofessional and child -like that he would go and say these things about a player that fulfilled his obligations, and this goes for any player.

Along with Lebron choosing Miami, the Heat have also brought back six-time All-Star Dwayne Wade, and Miami has also agreed to contract terms with five-time All-Star Chris Bosh. They will combine their skills to try and win a championship.

As for Lebron choosing Miami, it was his choice, and Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert should respect his decision whether he likes it or not. Gilbert should understand the business by now and how it works instead of calling people names.

Tiger's wife to get 100 million

According to reports Tiger Woods' wife Elin will get 100 million in their divorce settlement. With Tiger reportedly being worth 600 million, both Tiger and Elin agree that they don't want an ugly public divorce.

What started a roller coaster of events happened in November when much of Woods private life became public after he crashed his car into a tree at his Florida home. Rumors of lovers along with email messages Tiger had sent to multiple women about explicit sexual content became public and Tigers' humiliation was on the mainstream.

Tiger then went forward and released a statement explaining his deepest apologies, and how he was worried about the welfare of his kids because of much publicized and media attention following them. If Tiger didn't want all this attention then maybe he should of thought about that before he became intimately involved with multiple women. I sympathize greatly for the well-being of these children who have been through so much because of their father's bad choices.

I think Elin absolutely deserves the divorce settlement money not only for the pain and agony that her and her children went through, but for the public embarassment and humiliation that their family had to go through. No one should ever have to deal with a family crisis along with millions of people watching.

Michael Jackson's swarovski crystal-studded glove that he wore at his 1984 victory tour has been sold at an auction for $190,000, which is more than 10 times its value. He is the most collectible sought after celebrity and biggest entertainer of all time. It's not a big shock that his glove drew so much money, when people from all over the world came to the auction.

The original price for the glove was estimated to be worth around $20,000 to $30,000. Nearly one million dollars worth of Michael Jackson memorabilia was sold at the auction.

Many people grew up listening to the The Jackson Five, and I never can forget the song "ABC." When Michael broke out to a single vocal career I knew he he had amazing talents, but I never thought he would be gone one day. He has definitely made a mark on not only the music industry, but everyday people who loved hearing his songs or watching him perform.

Michael has left behind his music and his performing phenomenon that has shook the world and made it dance through their hearts. As Michael would say " I will never stop helping and loving people the way Jesus said to." Michael Jackson

Mom has triplets at 66

After undergoing in vitro fertilization 66-year-old Bhateri Devi gave birth to triplets in India after being married to her 64-year-old husband for 44 years. The babies are underweight, weighing less than three pounds each, which causes concern.

In vitro fertilization is a dangerous procedure in which egg cells are fertilized by sperm outside the womb, and is a major treatment to infertility. In 2008 the success rate for in vitro fertilization was 57 percent success for women under the age of 35. Now that percentage goes down as women who are older try the procedure.

According to Norwegian research women who undergo in vitro fertilization are five times at risk for developing complications during pregnancy known as placenta praevia, where the placenta attaches over the mother's cervix.

I understand that there are many women who can't have children, but undergoing in vitro vertilization is not the safest way to have a child. Risks of bleeding, miscarriage and premature delivery are all risks to keep in mind. I don't think it's worth it when you run the risk of hurting yourself and your child for that matter.

There are other means of raising children, such as adoption. There are many children around the world who need good homes and a parent to love them. Although it may not be your own child, love is love and a child out there needs it.

I think that it's great that this woman had children after being infertile for so many years, but these children run risks of health complications. Anyone who should decide such procedures should consult their doctor, and do research of their own before making a decision.

Texting while driving

Of course every teen always gets the lash for texting while driving. Although they are culprits of texting while driving, a new study says that adults are just as likely to do it.

The study found that nearly half of adults said they had sent messages while driving, and 26 percent of teens agreed that they had sent messages while driving as well. Texting while driving is extremely dangerous not only for you, but for drivers around you. Around 6,000 people die each year because of texting and driving.

Texting while driving can be related to drinking and driving because like drinking and driving, you have delayed responses and are not paying attention to the road because you are distracted. Studies have shown that texting and driving is worse than drinking and driving in some cases. Whether you think you are the best texter while driving, think again before you put other people's lives at risk, and know the risks.

Several states have banned texting while driving because of many accidents that is caused by them. So play it safe and wait till your car is parked before texting, because whoever you are texting, I'm sure they can wait for you to respond.

Chicago subway fire leaves 19 injured

A Chicago subway fire sends 19 to the hospital this past Sunday afternoon, and track grease is to blame according to CTA subway officials. The fire occured just north of downtown Chicago on the underground Red Line tracks. One hundred rescue workers responded to the blaze and the fire was put out in five minutes according to fire officials.

According to a spokesman for the Chicago fire department the sparks were ignored by passing trains. If someone sees sparks they should automatically be alerted to get help, so why didn't the train conductors alert anyone to avoid a dangerous situation?
There have been many instances involving trains where CTA personnel didn't take the proper precautions. For example a little less than a year ago I think many of us remember hearing about a 22 month year-old in her stroller being caught by the redline doors as it was moving, while the mother watched in hooror. Although the child is fine, this is still a very sad story that could be prevented.

Train conductors are supposed to watch and make sure that people aren't stuck in the doors before they start moving the train. If proper precautions were taken in the subway fire, we would have 19 less people who sustained injuries.

More To Love? Study Shows Marriage Linked to Obesity

We've all heard the old saying "Letting yourself go." More often than not, this has been attributed to gaining weight once people are in a solid relationship. While it may be easy to laugh this concept off, a recent study is believed to have proven a link between obesity and marriage.

Researchers followed 6,949 American adolescents into young adulthood report that those who married proved twice as likely to reach obesity as opposed to their single/dating counterparts. Living together also suffered similar results with higher odds of weight gain. Women were more greatly affected than men.

Reasons behind the unhealthy weight gain are attributed to more frequency of eating and larger portions when eating. Many people already make note of their own lack of ambition to keep up with fitness once they have "hooked" and been "hooked" in return.

A good question to ask is: Do we really stop working once we're off the market? Hopefully this article will serve as a warning to couples everywhere to focus on getting and staying healthy. Ask yourself the last time you and your partner set goals of weight loss and exercise. If it's been awhile, it's time to get yourselves in gear. Make sure you do everything you can to support (not nag) one another about being healthy. Watch what food gets brought home and what temptations (eating out, drinking) you present to one another.

Testing limits

WWE wrestling has been known for its share of violence, vulgar language, and for its biggest athletes in the world. On June 7 during Monday Night Raw the limits seemed to be tested.

Towards the end of the show John Cena, one of the top wrestlers of WWE raw faced CM Punk in the ring. During the match between Cena and CM Punk, eight NXT rookie wrestlers interrupted the match. They continued toward the ring from the crowd as they surrounded Cena, and knocked the referee out of the ring. They didn’t look happy, and what happened next left me speechless. As Cena was beat to the ground with punches to the face and kicks to the chest, the crowd became silent. The eight wrestlers then started attacking the time keepers, innocent bystanders, and started tearing apart the stage and ring in its entirety. Although I understand that this may have been staged, I know a lot of children who watch this show and take it seriously. Children look up to these wrestlers as role models and tremendous athletes.

How do you think this makes a child feel watching one guy get beat up by eight wrestlers his size or better? It’s not to be taken lightly, and parents should monitor what their kids watch, because often times children will mimic what they hear or see. This is a dangerous concept, and it teaches kids that eight guys on one will always win and get their way. It shows violence as being the only alternative.

Anyone who watches WWE raw should know that these athletes are highly trained, and qualified to do the stunts they do without getting hurt. This show should not be taken seriously.

Slim Thug, Black Women and the Truth

First, those comments were Slim Thug's opinions on women, plain and simple. Yet it's lit a fire under Black women that seems impossible to quench - so intense is the anger. I doubt that it's because Black women everywhere are upset at the notion that they will never be a part of Slim Thug's life. I don't think that it's because their lot is the same when it comes to Slim Thug's brother who also won't date Black women either.

Is it possibly because it was WHITE women who were celebrated in this article compared to Black women? Jackpot!

The fact that Slim compared White women to Black women and drew the conclusion that White women were more desirable than they, is more than a Black woman can take.

I don't believe in extremes, so to credit all White women with the ability to treat their men right and to doom Black women as companions that will never get it right is wrong. And since I don't believe in extremes, I'm not about to flip the script and dog white women either. Slim's approach was less than tasteful, but sadly, there was a lot of truth in what he said. Before I dive into those treacherous waters, there is something that Slim left out. He brags about what his half-white girlfriend does for him; he boasts of his brother's taunts that "Y'all gotta go through all that shit but my White woman is fine;" but there is no mention whatsoever of what he is doing for his woman. More on that later. Let me dive.

I sincerely believe that Black women DO need to stand by their men more, and I'll explain what I mean. Don't conjure up images in your head of being a doormat because that's the exact opposite of what it means to stand by your man. Does this sound familiar? "I don't need no man to take care of me," "I pay my own bills boo boo," "Ain't no man gonna tell me what to do!" It's the ATTITUDE behind these words that I'm addressing. The ATTITUDE.

It's this I'm-A-Stong-Black-Woman syndrome that keeps pushing men away. It's a defensive attitude that makes it impossible for Black women to treat men right! Black women carry this attitude into a relationship, and the man can't be ... a man. This defensive woman is always ready for an attack to come her way even where there is none. Here's an example, a REAL example. A couple is out on a date; this is very early in the relationship. The date is over, and the guy pulls to the curb in front of the girl's house. He gets out and runs around to her side to open the door for her. Her reaction? He's holding out his hand for her to take it, and she goes, "You don't have to do that for me; I know how to get out of a car." DAMN! Let the man be a man. (See, she doesn't NEED a man; this is how it's manifest in little situations.) Black women are so "strong" they don't realize that they are hiding fear, disappointment, cynicism, hurt and bitterness and calling it strength.

We can't have it both ways. I've seen the reaction on the faces of Black women when a Black man enters a room with a White woman on his arm.

Here are the comments from the Black women. "He's only with her for status;" "He must be rich or something;" "He only likes her because she's white;" "She's only with him because he's rich;" "He's a sell-out." And they are literally MAD at this guy that they don't even know! Who he dates is his business. Period. And here is the double standard. Chances are that if that same guy tried to approach one of these sisters he'd get shot down if he wasn't tall enough; dressed well enough; wasn't driving the right car .... There are so many things Black men have to do and be before they are suitable. No wonder they're sick and tired!

Let me ask the ladies this question. What are YOU bringing to the table. I'm tired of the "My man ... "conversations. You know what I mean. "My man will do this; my man will do that." What will YOU do for YOUR man? What are you offering? Are you educating yourself? Are you taking care of your body? Are you an independent thinker? Are you a leader? Are you willing to pamper your man? What are your goals? Can you carry a conversation about life, politics, art, music, community? Are you humble enough to cook for him if he wanted, or is that another, "Ain't no man gonna tell me ..." Are you willing to let him be a MAN? There is a word Slim used: King. Are you willing to treat your man like a KING? We always want to be some kind of queen.

Well you're only a queen if you are with a king. Can you make him feel that way day in and day out just by your actions? Can you? Or will it be all about you and what you want?

The old pining, "There are no good men out there" is false. They're out there. Some of you just don't see it because your definition of a "good man" needs adjusting. You date the player with money, nice car, great house, he spoils you rotten with material things, then when he cheats on you your heart is broken and you cry "There are no good men out there!" You looked for the wrong things as your criteria. It's like this. Let's say that you think the color red is really called "blue" and you're looking for a red shirt. You will go shopping and stare at red shirts all day, and eventually cry, "There are no red shirts anywhere!" It's right in front of you but because you aren't programmed to see it as red, because you think it's blue, you miss out. Good men are right in front of you, but if you don't see money, status, a certain look, or hear the right lyrics, you miss out. Revisit your definition of "good man."

I was not born or raised in this country. I'm not American, but I have lived here for quite some time, and I can tell you that Black women in America are very, very different. Of course I haven't met all the African American women in this country, but of those I HAVE met, I found many of them to have a defensiveness when it comes to men. It's like them against the men! And I understand that it comes from past hurt, pain and disappointment, but if you remember anything at all from this blog, please remember this - you CAN have meaningful, loving and LASTING relationships with your men. And I mean drama-free, gentle, fun, healthy, exciting, loving and faithful relationships. My husband is African American and he is amazing! I suppose I got one of the "good men;" but my point is that there is nothing more beautiful to me than letting my man be a MAN, and because he is a real man, hey, I don't mind cooking, cleaning, doing laundry, meeting his needs, because a real MAN reciprocates it right back to you. He does the same and more for me. It works BOTH ways. And this is where I go back to Slim and his neglect to mention what HE brings to the relationship.

Slim-the-counselor says that relationships should be 50/50, yet his article celebrates only what the White women are doing! Slim what are you bringing to the table?

And I'm not talking about being a rapper and making money and wearing bling. A real man does not want his woman to be a doormat that waits on him hand and foot. A real man doesn't brag that his woman does whatever he wants. My dog can do that - he's very well-trained. A real man isn't happy with a partner who isn't his equal. A real man wants to walk side-by-side with his woman - Black or White - and enjoy the journey together. And a real woman won't step in front of her man, put her hands on him, belittle or disrespect him. But she doesn't walk behind him either.

Slim is also off on another point. He says that relationships should be 50/50. WRONG!! They should be 100/100 with each person giving his or her all to the other. If you are not complete in yourself, you won't be able to really give anything to another person. Instead you will drain them in attempts to find fulfillment in them.

I may not have liked the way that Slim spoke in his article, but it doesn't mean that a message wasn't in there. Cut through it all, and be honest with yourselves: Black women need to step up and be the women they are meant to be. The impression the world is getting isn't a favorable one. Things have to change and it starts with just one woman.

It starts with you.

Sandra Bullock

Oscar Winner Sandra Bullock received a standing ovation from a supportive crowd of fans at the MTV Movie awards. Accepting the generation reward, people were more concerned about cheering her on in wake of the Jesse James cheating extravaganza.

She spoke to the crowd about people going back to normal and treating her like they always used to. "No matter what you might have seen or heard or read lately, I like what I'm doing and I'm not going anywhere. Speaking of what you might have seen or heard, I wanted to clarify some things: Number one, I'm not dead. Number two, everyone has cellulite, not just me."

Sandra appeared calm and collective, but I couldn't help but notice the hurt in her eyes. Behind her smiles and laughter seemed to be pained Sandra. Throughout her entire speech I couldn't help but think why people cheat and what cause them to do so. At the same time I thought of how opposite Jesse and Sandra were. Jesse being the tough biker kind of guy who must have been used to having several women around him at a time. Then Sandra is the laid back actress who seems to laugh and enjoy life without living on the edge like her ex-husband.

I tend to think that people always fall back into their old ways. In a weird way it was expected that Jesse would eventually go back to what he was used to. It is unfortunate that now Sandra is stuck dealing with this, but she should try to keep focusing on her own career and moving forward, never addressing the scandal in an acceptance speech of hers. He no longer deserves any attention on her part.

Historical shipwreck found

It was an ordinary day for Ray Midgett as as he hunted the Corolla beaches of North Carolina. Midgett uses a metal detector and shovel to uncover an array of objects from antique coins to wedding rings. His biggest discovery came when he discovered the remains of a historical shipwreck dating back to the 1600's. This is the oldest shipwreck ever found off the coast of North Carolina.

In order to preserve the wooden vessel and keep what was left intact, historians had to act fast to recover the ship. For an ordinary person to discover this rare find is remarkable. The wreckage was hidden under the sand for centuries.

Midgett not only found an ancient ship dating back to the 1600's but he found coins from the reign of King Louis XIII in France and Charles I in England. After he discovered the ship, he said it became a part of him. He used his role as a governmental auditor to make sure his discover was salvaged.

This story can be an inspiration for many who come across something that is so valuable and important to them that they want to know as much as possible about the history and about what it may means to them. I think what Midgett did to make sure his find was salvaged, was brave of him.

NAACP Hearing Things in Hallmark Card

The NAACP is calling a Hallmark graduation card racist because of a word they THINK they heard on the card's recording. You cannot be serious! Take a look.

The congratulatory card features two lovable Hallmark cartoon characters, Hoops and Yoyo, whose voices you hear when you open the card. They are chiming in with statements like,

"Hey world, we're officially putting you on notice." They continue by saying, "And you black holes, you're so ominous. And you planets, watch your back." In other words, the card is meant to celebrate the recent grad who is about to take on the world and anything in it.

Well, the Los Angeles chapter of the NAACP heard something completely different. You know that reference to black HOLES? The civil rights organization heard "black WHORES." Minnie Hatley of the NAACP even insists that she hears the "r" in there; that the word is whores and not holes.

It gets even more embarrassing. Leon Jenkins of the Los Angeles NAACP shared his feelings about the statement with ABC news. (Again, the statement is, "And you black holes, you're so ominous. And you planets, watch your back.")

"This was very demeaning to African American women. When it made reference to African American women as whores, and at the end it says 'watch your back,'" he said. At the end? At the end it said "PLANETS" watch your back!! Planets! What does that have to do with racism, black women or whores? NOTHING!! Hallmark confirmed to the press that the card had a solar system theme, hence the reference to "black holes," "putting the world on notice" and planets watching their backs.

Now the NAACP is clear in its stance that it doesn't want to see the cards ever again, and according to ABC, Hallmark is removing the cards from its shelves, and CVS and Walgreens are doing the same. If the NAACP is SO enraged at a greeting card that "demeans" women, then where are they on the issue of demeaning hip hop music that calls women ho's and bitches, and the like? Where is THAT press conference? Where is the press conference to demand that such music and content is not played on the radio or television? Where is the statement made to BET and MTV about playing videos that demean women? Where's the demand to take THAT content off the shelves? When will we see you put down your foot, NAACP, declaring that you NEVER want to hear such demeaning music again? Where is that gumption?

Instead you go after a GREETING CARD because you heard what you wanted to hear. I listened to the greeting over and over and over LONGING to hear some semblance of an "R" up in there and it never happened. Why? Because there is no "R"; there is no "WHORE"; there is no "group of children laughing and joking about blackness again"; there is no racism. NONE! You listened to that thing so much you can't tell left from right. You listen to a greeting card long enough and I'm sure, yes, you'll start hearing things. Soon hoe, hole, whore, ho, hold, all sound the same. If you're looking for something, you're likely to find it whether it's really there or not.

I am SO embarrassed. How is anyone supposed to take your organization seriously? You were founded on noble principles and somewhere along the line you got caught up in the idea of yourself, you believed your own hype, became a system onto your own interests and here we are 101 years later - a greeting card pissed you off. You are supposed to be the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People but you're not advancing black people in this country. Keep this up, and they will forever regress!

This is one race card you can't pull. NAACP, apologize!!

Cat saves life

A woman came face- to-face with two vicious pitbulls who wouldn't stop attacking her, but her savior came as a little four legged cat named Lema. She distracted the two dogs by hissing at them while the woman's husband carried her into the house.

This lifesaving cat is said to be very timid, but this woman owes her life to this furry friend. Many animals have been very grateful to their owners by rescuing them from harms way.

Numerous cats voluntarily become helper companions to blind, deaf or the elderly. They are used in nursing homes not only to comfort the elderly, but they know when someone is about to pass away.

A new study shows that dogs can smell cancer in patients' breath. Not only cats, but dogs as well are a necessity when it comes to helping the sick and elderly.

I grew up taking care of a variety of animals, and never failed to notice how aware, quick, loving and smart they were. Although many of these animals have proper homes, there's still about one animal that is put down every eight seconds, that's four million a year. It's sad to know that although these innocent animals are saving lives and making us happy they still have to be put down.

There are thousands of animals that have saved people's lives including a Newfoundland dog who rescued 92 people from a sinking ship in 1919. Animals have feelings that are quite similar to humans and they know when someone is in danger and needs their help. Animals quite frankly don't get enough credit for their loving compassion. If you have an animal at home give them a little extra love and attention for being the lovable animal that they are.

Reality Love

With the Monday finale of Tough Love, two couples were joined in marriage in front of millions of viewers. The happy ending was truly the finale to a long and vigorous journey throughout boot-camp. After being given the ultimatum by the shows host, Steve Ward, these couples had to either break-up or get engaged at the end of the season. These real-life couples were put to the test to see if their relationships could survive for better or worse.

This form of reality T.V. allows other real-life couples to watch and observe the hardships of relationships and re-evaluate their own. Reality T.V. has made it easier for people to connect on a global scale. Some people fear that the way they live is abnormal, but once they see that someone else is just like them, they feel at ease.

Being in a relationship is difficult and following these couples through their journeys to grow as a team enables and encourages people viewing to apply the shows tactics to their own relationships. They don't have to get famous and apply for the show, but having reality T.V. available is worthy.

Plastic surgery has taken over America. With media focusing on celebrity perfection due to plastic surgery, people have become obsessed. Young boys and girls see celebrities in magazines and on T.V. that have undergone numerous cosmetic surgeries, therefore causing their self-esteem to lower because they do not physically measure up to the standards of a Hollywood star.

In today's society, it has become difficult for a boy or girl to develop physically and mentally because they know that any of their imperfections can be fixed. Recently, Hills star Heidi Montag had 10 procedures done to feel more attractive. Ranging from a mini brow lift, to fat injections in her cheeks, liposuction in her waist, hips and inner/outer thighs, Heidi has become obsessed with perfection.

It is disturbing that young people admire celebrities that are made plastic instead of admiring real figures of people. It is unrealistic to be extremely skinny or have no wrinkles in your face. Boys and girls have to learn that it is natural to age and it is normal to not be indefectible. I fear that people have lost the sense of beauty in naturalness because of amped up surgery infatuated celebrities.

People need to realize that these cosmetic surgical procedures might fix the outside of a person, but their inner being is the exact same. If your confidence level doesn't come from within you, a face lift here and a tummy tuck there will not make you feel better as a person. Remember that knowing and loving yourself is the way to enhance beauty, not cosmetic surgery.

Since Apple has launched the ipad on April 3, it has sold two million ipads in less than 60 days as of May 31, 2010. The ipad starts out at $499, and is now available with Wi-Fi and 3G capabilities. It offers a 9.7- in high resolution LED backlit IPS display with a Multi-Touch screen. These features make it easy for web browsing watching movies or viewing photos. At 1.5 pounds and o.5" thin, you can take the ipad anywhere.

Along with being very convenient to carry around with you, the ipad can last up to 10 hours while surfing the web or watching videos. Apple engineers used the same lithium polymer battery technology that is used for the Mac notebook is used for the ipad.

The new 13" MacBook Pro models carry a 10-hour battery, while the new 15" and 17" models only carry 8-to-9 hours of battery life. Apple has also introduced new high-resolution displays for its 15" MacBook Pro that has a standard 1440x900 glossy screen.

Apple says that its new 15-inch and 17-inch MacBook Pro models, which will now carry Intel’s Core i5 and Core i7 CPUs, are up to 50 percent faster than the previous systems. The Core 2 Duo will still be standard in the 13-inch MacBook Pro.

The 13-inch MacBooks start at $1199, 15-inch model at $1799, and the 17-inch model at $2,299.

The iphone 4G is coming soon, but Verizon is not thinking of carrying Apples popular device. Other networks "might be" says Steve Jobs.

Giselle Ghofrani (center)

As a child, everyone has their dreams of being something amazing when they grow up. For some, their wishes never come true, for others, they live out a dream they never knew they could.

Giselle Ghofrani is a 22 year old fashion designer, something she never imagined to be true. Throughout high school, Ghofrani had a passion for art. Being so spirited on the idea of art, she attended Columbia College in Chicago, majoring in art history.

Throughout college, Ghofrani's mother worked in the alterations department for Vera Weng in Chicago. She was two years into college when her father became very ill. Ghofrani's mother felt obligated to take care of her husband, causing Giselle to take her mother's position at Vera Weng. After about six months of working with alterations, Giselle's adoration for fashion caused her to switch her major at Columbia.

Soon after becoming a fashion major, the owner of the Vera Weng Boutique took notice of Ghofrani. She was asked to create a show piece gown for a show in Indianapolis. Her design was a sensation and people wanted more.

Ghofrani began listening to the needs of her clients. Women would request dresses with sleeves and a sweetheart neckline, or a detachable bottom. She soaked all of these great ideas in, leading her to create her own line of gowns.

Ghofrani's inspiration did not only come from people, she used her art history background to incorporate designs and textures in gowns that people had not seen before.

"I was inspired by a painter in my art history class in high school, Poulouse Lautrec," Ghofrani said.

"After using some of his work, I went to Turkey for a while to absorb the architecture and scenery," Giselle said.

She drew ideas from the beauty she embraced around her, dreaming of making women feel their absolute best.

Now, Ghofrani is a person everyone should know. She has completed her very own collection, Giselle, sold at Belle Vie Boutique in Chicago. She is currently interning at W Magazine and Vera Weng in New York City. She works with accessories, where she draws more inspiration from the stitching and folding of new fabrics and handbags. The techniques she is learning at W Magazine have caused her to design accessories as well.

A hot beat, something to dance to or a catchy phrase that sticks in your head like "Bye bye bye" or "Oops I did it again" is the way mainstream music is described today. The true meanings of songs, the soulful touch of a passionate artist and lyrics that display more then just a sexual connotation is missing from music, until now.

After the power of Lauren Hill's voice, the poetic twist of Tupac and the meaningful raps of Bone Thugs N' Harmony, rap has not been the same. Now, A fresh new artist, Drake brings to the table a sense of rap mixed with a legitimately good voice. He appears to be a relaxed guy, but his lyrics are anything but calm.

Drake sends a message through his music that one must analyze closely to hear. Some people might say he is just a rapper in distress, or some will say he speaks too fast, but those who listen will comprehend the message hidden between the lines of a simple rap.

In his song "Say What's Real," Drake sings about his life and reveals personal feelings and opinions to the world. Below are some lines from the song. I want to know how you feel. Lee DeWyze is Winner of American Idol 2010

Season nine came to an emotional end with the announcement of Lee DeWyze as the winner of American Idol 2010. Runner up, Crystal Bowersox, was there to give him a victory hug as he told her that he loved her.

Lee's hometown of Mount Prospect, IL went wild as they watched Ryan Seacrest's announcement on Jumbotrons. Lee won fans over with his raspy rocker style and sweet demeanor.

This finale show was jam-packed with entertainment. Janet Jackson, Michael McDonald, Alice In Chains, Chicago, Alanis Morissette, Bee Gees were some of the performers, along with past idol winners Kris Allen and Carrie Underwood.

But there was a bitter sweet feeling in the air, with this finale being Simon Cowell's final appearance on Idol. Past idol winners and contestants performed a moving tribute for him, and Paula Abdul made an appearance just to honor her former judge mate. When Simon went on stage to respond to the outpouring of support he was clearly emotional.

Simon isn't leaving Fox, however, and he will still be the judge we've grown to love (well at least I love him!) Simon will be producer, mentor and judge on the U.S. version of the British hit X Factor which will also air on Fox. So no, we can't get rid of the cynical and sarcastic quips that easily!

Biggest Contestant Wins Biggest Loser

When Michael Ventrella stepped onto the Biggest Loser campus, he wasn't just the heaviest contestant this season; he was the heaviest contestant EVER to be a part of The Biggest Loser. The 31-year-old deejay from Chicago started at 526 pounds and lost 264 pounds over the course of the season, and took home the $250,000 grand prize. In other words, Michael lost a little more than 50% of his body weight!! He also broke a record and lost the most weight ever lost on the ranch by any contestant.

Michael was an inspiration because his journey was so challenging. At week 16, the remaining five contestants were treated to a make over and a thousand-dollar shopping spree. While all the others shopped for drastically smaller sizes than they ever had before, Michael still had to shop at the Big & Tall shop for his clothes. He lamented, "Who loses 183 pounds and is still overweight?"

He pushed past his insecurities and kept at it and won this season even when he was probably the one most underestimated. Truly an inspiration to all.

Time Runs Out For 24

I'm not an avid TV watcher, so when I find a show that actually catches my attention, that show usually holds it. For the past nine years, that show was 24. And we said goodbye to it tonight.

I don't know if it was the brilliant writing or the clever choice of characters used to carry the plot. The combination of the two were critical to this show's success and huge fan following.

Chloe was by far one of my favorite.

It took some getting used to her little personality disorder, but she developed into a wonderful character. I will definitely miss her quirky inability to manage a smile beyond a reluctant scowl.

Then there was president Taylor.

Her grace and integrity were endearing and even at the end where she strayed for a few episodes, she redeemed herself; that was truly a relief to me. Next to President Palmer of earlier seasons, she was my favorite.

And who can forget Dana Walsh? She was quite the surprise. There is always a mole in CTU , but this is one I didn't see coming. True to 24 tradition, we discovered what was going on without any previous hint that this was coming.

Then again, the plots within the plot kept the action fresh and moving each and every episode. There was never a dull moment. Ironically, this could have become a monotonous and predictable aspect to 24, leaving the audience to expect a twist around every corner, but even that didn't happen.

And I know I'm not alone when I say that I hated seeing that clock tick right before a commercial break because I knew that time was literally running out. So when those final few seconds passed before the end of an episode, I was left with my jaw on the floor or my hands holding my head as I yelled, "Oh My God!!!"

But it was this last episode where time was so precious. I knew that I had only 2 hours left before that final countdown ticked away for the last time.

And 24 would not be what it was without Jack Bauer. Precious Jack who couldn't avoid trouble if he died trying, was the perfect lead character.

Yes, he was always in a bind, going rogue, being tortured, running from the law, taking matters into his own hands, and not once did I grow tired of that. Not once did I ever think he was wrong, everything he did somehow seemed justified, regardless of how horrific.

I doubt that 24 would be the success it was if Keifer Sutherland didn't give his all to every mission, and it is him I will miss the most.

Texas adopts new Teaching Curriculum

There's been much controversy over Texas adopting a new social studies and history curriculum that dulls down the teaching of religious freedoms. The Texas State Board of Education will require students to learn that separation between church and state is not in the constitution, and are modernizing historical periods from B.C.E and C.E. They also agreed to replace Thomas Jefferson as an influential political philosopher in a world history class.

The board also strengthened requirements on teaching the Judeo-Christian influences on the nation's Founding Fathers and be required that the U.S. government be referred to as a "constitutional republic" rather than democratic. These guidelines will teach 4.8 million students for the next ten years. Along with those changes, they will also be used by textbook publishers who develop materials for other states as well.

This so-called education regiment is a scheme to teach children about the boards beliefs rather than educating them on actual history and enhancing the mind to prepare them for the real world. Teaching kids that the Separation between church and state is not in the constitution is hindering to their learning abilities by not teaching them history. The basis for separation between church and state is that the government may not impose religion on Americans.

When parents send their kids to school, they expect them to learn and grow, not to do just the opposite. People put a lot of faith in politicians and to people with authority because we believe most often that they want to do what's right.

The Texas Board of Education needs to think of the Texas students' future instead of their own. People and events in history made our country the way it is today and when young children aren't learning the history of their country then that also skews the ideology of the student. If one is not educated about history, then history will repeat itself.

Going green? Signs of Jealousy in your relationship

The Green Eyed Monster is one of the most uninvited guests into a relationship. Jealousy rears its ugly head hiding the insecurity and low self-esteem that we truly suffer from. While many believe they can find valid reasons for doubting their significant other's fidelity, ultimately, jealousy is good at telling you that your worries of cheating are bound to come true.

Forewarned is forearmed so take these steps to heart and keep the green eyed monster at bay.

Take a step back - Jealousy ramps negativity and anger up quickly. By the time we're at this point, we are already beyond sound thinking and judgment. Take a breather when you feel your body tense up, your lungs breathing heavy and your heart pounding at the thoughts of your lover laughing, touching and taking phone numbers from someone else.

Talk with a friend - Having a friend to talk to can give you and outside view. A good friend will have no issues telling you that you are way off if jealousy is making you see things. Also talking out your feelings will help deflate some of the energy revving them up and beyond control.

Express your feelings - Tell your partner how you feel. If you have fears that they'll leave you, cheat on you, find someone else, they need to know that these doubts and insecurities are running you. Expressing your feelings to your partner will also help break down those walls that keep you and jealousy up talking all day and all night.

Look at your own past- Most people who suffer from jealousy now have been dealing with it their entire life. Maybe it was your parents' divorce, maybe it's a sense of abandonment or maybe your previous girlfriend or boyfriend ran around on you. Whatever it is, look at your past for the roots of your inner aching.

Set boundaries - Usually the feelings that your partner is flirting or you beloved is laughing too hard at someone's jokes is because there are no boundaries. You and your partner should have clear understandings about eating and drinking with others, physical contact and what activities with other people are and are not acceptable.

End the end, jealousy can always find a crack in the relationship where it can set root. But like any weed, it can be pulled for better and healthier growth.

Mom has 5-year-old arrested

This video was recently posted on CNN showing a 5-year-old boy being arrested by his mom to teach him a lesson. The boy apparently kept trying to set fires in the house. The mom tried to discipline the child by telling him no, and taking away his toys, but nothing worked. She got her friend involved who was a police officer to try and teach him a lesson by handcuffing him and even putting him in the back seat of the patrol car.

I don't agree at all with what this mother was trying to do to teach her son a lesson. There are other ways to discipline your child and to teach them right from wrong. Just because things might get rough doesn't mean you have to take drastic measures with a 5-year-old child. Children will want to test their limits, and parents should stay consistent with their discipline because that will just encourage more misbehavior.

Other ways to discipline your children would be to really know your child, teach them right from wrong and to listen to them as well. Give them love and affection. All children are different and have different temperaments. Not all types of discipline will work for all children, but having your young child handcuffed is not the answer, and may create more problems in the future. How a parent behaves when they're disciplining their child will determine how your child will behave or misbehave in the future.

As for the mom who had her son arrested in the video, I don't think she quite understood the effects this could have on her son in the future. If she's willing to take drastic measures such as this who says she won't take even more drastic measures if it happens again.

D. Wade V.S. The X-Mrs. Wade

By now everyone has heard that actress Gabrielle Union and NBA star Dwayne Wade are being sued by Siovaughn Wade, Wade's estranged wife. The suit claims the two allegedly engaged in "sexual foreplay" in front of the Wade's children.

Additional details not withstanding, does this open up a new legal and relationship Pandora's box? Can people now find ways to get back at their spouses and partners for cheating, broken hearts and other relationship issues through the legal system? While people having been using their kids in divorces as tools of attack for decades, this suite opens up a direct assault from an angry partner in a lovelife gone bad.

Currently, Mrs. Wade has gotten herself on the wrong side of the court with her failure to attend a hearing. However, she may have started an avalanche of new ways to stop throwing plates at your ex and start throwing the book of the law instead.

Running on Empty

Every college student knows the pressures and demands of finals week. Many will get very little sleep and for some, it will be a routine to only run on four to six hours of sleep. Not only are college students managing the demands of school, but many maintain a job and an internship. A good night's sleep with eight to ten hours is a rare occurrence for the busy lifestyle of a college student.

Studies find that 20 percent of college students suffer from sleep disorders. The concerns for lack of sleep is its short and long term effects on the body. Sleep deprivation can have serious effects on your health in the form of physical and mental impairments. Little rest impairs our ability to think, handle stress, maintain a healthy immune system and moderate our emotions. These things not only effect our body, but our ability to excel and do well in school.

The brain's ability to problem solve is greatly impaired. Decision-making abilities are compromised, and not enough rest can also cause people to have hallucinations. Other common effects of sleep deprivation include depression, heart disease, irritability, slower reaction times, slurred speech and tremors.

The causes for college sleep deprivation may be from unusual schedules, social activities and work. Excessive partying, worrying, or cramming for exams are other examples for the cause of sleep deprivation.
So I know you're wondering what are the solutions to sleep deprivation. There's a lot you can do to get a better nights sleep. First of all get more sleep and get better sleep. Things you can do to get a good night's sleep are drink tea, no caffeine past three, read a book, meditate, work out a couple hours before bed, but not right before bed. Get to know your body and how much sleep you need to feel refreshed and energized in the morning.

When school, work and other demands are having an effect on your sleep, remember that getting a good night's rest is very important to the mental and physical well being of your health. There are many things that college students can do to get well rested before that final exam. Don't overwork yourself and treat yourself to a night of relaxation.

Cops: To Serve and Protect ... Themselves?

I wrote a blog a little while ago, well over a year ago, about the deaths of two young men: Andrew Cazares, 23,and Fausto Manzera, 21, photos below.

They died on Friday, April 10, 2009 because a Chicago police detective was driving drunk. I'll say it again. A Chicago police detective was driving drunk, his name, Joseph Frugoli. His blood alcohol content was more than three times the legal limit, yet he was behind the wheel of his Lexus SUV. Cazares, above, had pulled his Dodge Intrepid over to the side of the southbound Dan Ryan to wait for help for a possible flat tire.

At approximately 3:30 a.m., Frugoli, driving 60 to 65 m.p.h. - which was above the speed limit - slammed into the Dodge shooting it forward and causing it to burst into flames. Frugoli tried to leave the scene - the scene where these two innocent young men were left behind to burn to death in a heap of crumpled metal. Because of Detective Frugoli. Plain and simple.

So this isn't new. We know about the case all too well; we know that shortly after the accident Frugloi was released on $500,000 bond. But we also know that had the roles been reversed, you know, if say two cops were in that Dodge and a drunk civilian had crashed into them as they innocently sat at the side of the road waiting for help thus causing their car to go up in flames and killing the two men in blue, the outcome would be different.

The only thing new about this blog is this. I am tired of police officers getting slapped on the wrist and I want to do more than just write about it. In 1990, this same Frugoli was driving 80 m.p.h. in a 50 m.p.h. zone; in 2008, he ignored a stop sign. Both those tickets were thrown out, per court records. In 2005, Frugoli crashed into a 61-year-old man's car on the Dan Ryan, was cited with failure to reduce speed, but that ticket was also dropped.

Why? That is what I need to know. Why are his tickets being thrown out, only allowing him to get behind the wheel AGAIN and cause more hurt and despair? Why would a civilian with those recurring charges already be behind bars? Why are they not held to the same laws that we are?

I want US, just simple people to start making our voices heard. Get a petition started; boycott work; march silently in front of police stations; wear t-shirts that demand that cops stop killing and getting away with it.

I don't know where I will begin, but I am starting with this blog, and I will begin some sort of action, and when I do, I will let you know what it is. Enough is enough!! I won't be bullied into silence.

Tammy's story: A woman's struggle and a son's resentment

This video shows how a lower class family struggles day-to-day to survive while their mom walks ten miles to her job everyday in rain or snow. Our society that we live in today builds a dynamic of social norms that we have to abide by whether it be having designer clothes or driving an expensive car.

Matt, the eldest son of Tammy in the video wants to fit in at school, but is embarrassed by where he lives and what his family looks like. He explains in the video how he wants to fix things up, but would rather stay inside and watch TV.

I understand that it may be hard for Matt to fit in when he doesn't have much, but there comes a time when you have to accept where you come from. He disrespects his mother in the video by saying that he doesn't like the way she looks and that he's embarrassed by her image.

No one gets to decide who their parents are, or what class they are raised in, but one should make the best out of a bad situation. Society puts pressures among teens to fit in, and many will do whatever it takes to fit in. This is a sad situation, because when someone doesn't accept where they came from, then they'll never be satisfied.

Matt says in the video how he won't talk to his brother in school because of what he wears. If he wants his family to fit in like he does, maybe he should get a job and get them those things.

Instead of helping out his mom when she struggles daily to feed her children, Matt is only concerned with what his friends think. I hear the phrase teens will be teens, but isn't that just giving them an excuse to act a certain way and escape from their own reality?

Living in a Reality World

Reality TV is taking over the TV industry. Everywhere you turn people and celebrities are getting their own reality show. Programs such as the Bad Girls Club, The Hills, Keeping up With The Kardashians, Jersey Shore and many others maintain ongoing stereotypes about gender, culture and race and glamorize the life that they live. Young children watch these shows and look up to these people as role models.

Keeping up with the Kardashians has been on the air since October of 2007. On the season finale when Kourtney gave birth to her baby boy, it drew in 4.8 million viewers, the biggest in E history. Shouldn't more people be tuning into important world and local issues going on instead of watching Kourtney Kardashian giving birth?

These reality stars show the latest trends and are becoming reality icons. Imitation of these reality stars becomes a major issue, because when they are constantly in the media more and more people want to see more of them and become like them. Take Kim Kardashian for example, it seems as if being in front of the media is her only business venture. Without her reality fame, I don't think anyone would know who she was.

With a mass amount of reality TV, how does this affect young children? According to recent television statistics children spend on average 28 hours per week watching TV. Adolescence is a crucial time in a child's life where he takes in a great amount of knowledge and learns how to maintain a healthy lifestyle. A child should be active and taking part in activities to feed and enhance the mind with beneficial knowledge, not reality TV. Children watch these shows believing that this is what family life really is. So they imitate the actions portrayed on these shows without questioning if it's wrong.

In one of the episodes Kourtney's fiance Scott got extremely drunk on the night of Kim's birthday, and got violent towards a waiter at a restaurant. The episode completely embarrassed the family. Every family has their problems and when these episodes air showing the Kardashian family having issues, people think that this family is just fame hungry and want media attention to gain popularity. There's a time when someone's private life should be kept private.

I don't understand how an entire family would show their private lives to millions of viewers and be the target for hate and criticism. It seems that much of reality TV is based upon power, money and fame. When it comes to the "hit" reality show Keeping up with the Kardashians, they are just among the many others who want to exploit their family to gain money and fame.

Reality TV distorts reality with unreality and many people enjoy watching someone's misfortunes. I don't agree with a family having a reality show displaying personal and private issues that should stay within a family.

Clearly it’s not okay to age in society and that doesn’t fit in with the social norms of today’s society. With anti-aging serums, botox, make-up, anti wrinkle cream, retouching, and all the products sold on the mass market to promote staying young, and pretty, we can never be the perfect image or body that society creates.

The depiction between being accepted and looking pretty in society run close together because often enough you can’t have both. We have to stay young in society, because that is everything the popular culture promotes and sells.

Society and popular culture create this dynamic of staying pretty in the way in which woman are seen and promoted in the media world. The negative aspects of how women are displayed in ads, commercials, and movies displays a stereotype that society then takes in and creates in their own mind with what is the ideal woman, and how can I be that ideal woman.

Not being over weight, having white teeth, nice healthy hair, big breasts, dressing sexy with little or no clothing, and appealing to look at are just a few things that woman have to do to be accepted or feel pretty in society.

And as women age this cycle becomes even more impossible. Everywhere you look you see marketed ads saying what you’re supposed to do to improve your physical features to become more appealing and accepted. Buy more and do more to attain this lifestyle of being pretty and young. This impossible image that society creates dominates the lives of many women so that they feel wanted, and accepted in the world.

Social class in America is everything. Everyone is constantly trying to get higher up in the status ladder. Some people are born into wealthy families, middle class families and into poor families. It seems that the lower your social status is, the harder it is to attain a higher career path.

The U.S. Census Bureau counted that in 2009 there were 37.3 million poor people living in America. With the poor economy, there is an increase in less fortunate families living in America. The divide between the middle class and poor is closer than it has been since the Great Depression.

But We Never DID Anything - The Dangers of Emotional Affairs

We often define an affair as sexual relations with someone outside of the relationship. We look for rendezvous in hotels, lipstick on collars and misspoken names during peaks of intimacy. However, while physical affairs are certainly detrimental to relationships, emotional affairs are just as destructive.

Emotional affairs are connections with others outside of the relationship that should only be with our spouse or partner. Emotional affairs are intimate conversations, anticipations, levels of trust and expectations of satisfaction that should only be with and for our special someones. True, it is not sex, but too many moments of bearing your soul with that cute coworker or too many heart-to-heart conversations about your hopes and dreams can lead to feelings shifting from your current partner. Emotional affairs start harmless by "just talking" and often find their roots in difficult moments in your present relationship. Soon enough however, just talking can lead to lunches, drinks, dinners and possibly even physical contact.

Be careful in your emotional connections. When you feel that your partner is distant, talk about how connected you both still are. Resume talking like you once did when the courtship phase was in effect and save those special anticipations, levels of trust and expectations of satisfaction for the one you're with.

Tea Party Protesters

Around 2,000 people attended this year's tax day Tea Party rally at the Daley Center in Chicago to protest "big government" and to support lower taxes. Not only were their rallies in Illinois, but they were nationwide in every major city across the U.S.

These rallies were not only a success the cities themselves, but they sparked a voice that went across to politicians and to Congress. Joe Walsh a candidate for Congress spoke at the rally in Chicago, reminding the Tea Party activists to be like President Reagans attitude for Tea Party Protesters "Lets be happy Warriors."

People need to voice their opinion, and send a message to Congress about what we think they're doing wrong that is having a negative effect on our lives. It's "We the people not we the politicians."

For many people, we have to deal with the strains of the economy, whether it be the issue with cap and trade, healthcare, fewer jobs, foreclosure, immigration reform and many other issues.

How can we be happy protesters when our lives our stricken by the poor economy and by the poor choices made by Congress and state government? Our voices and our opinions need to be said, and what better day than to make a stand on tax day.

Hate Groups on the Rise

According to the Southern Poverty Law Center Web site there are 932 known hate groups in the United States, with 28 of those being in Illinois. The state with the most hate groups is Texas, having 66.

We live in a day and age where technology is easily accessed, and so are hate websites. There are more religious hate websites than there are religious websites. This disturbs me not only because of who is getting on the hate websites, but a majority of young children have access to computers, and who says what may happen when they may come across these websites? We need to be aware of the fact that there are not only numerous hate groups out there, but there are a number of hate websites as well. Below is the number of hate groups in each state.

With hate websites and hate groups on the rise, what does this say about the future of our country? According to the Southern Poverty Law Center’s website, hate groups have increased by 50 percent since the year 2000.

The three main reasons that the percentages of hate groups have increased so much is because of the downturn of the economy, the election of the first African American president, Barack Obama, along with immigration issues that the United States has faced over the last five to ten years. This is an extreme problem to our country and to the issues our country must face in the future.

Fighting Temptations

There’s an old saying that the best way to fight a temptation is to give in to it! While obviously a humorous take on dealing with the moral struggles, there is a serious weight to these love life dangers. We all know what being tempted can lead to. Anyone remember a certain apple in a garden?

Temptations come in all shapes and sizes and could be former addictions (drinking, pornography), former lovers (ex-boyfriends, ex-girlfriends), bad habits or even potential new lovers (that cute, flirty girl at the coffee shop.) Whatever the struggle, there are several steps to dealing with temptations and how to fight them.

Identify the temptation(s) – Knowing where your weak spots are will help you protect them. Know if you’re longing for attention or if you’re in need of physical satisfaction. Being aware of your weak points will let you know if you should avoid that shoulder-to-cry-on cutie or miss hands-on-your-sore-shoulders.

Avoid them if possible – Temptations can always put a little doubt into your relationship focus but they can only do so much if you steer clear of them. If it’s someone other than your sweetheart who makes you feel the warm and fuzzies, stay away from them. If it’s someone other than your spouse who flirts with you and interests you, stay clear of this person as they can work those weak spots.

Strengthen your relationship – Weak spots and temptations can lead to love life damage if the relationship is weak itself. Do your best to strengthen your relationship emotionally and physically through communication, quality time together and a healthy sexual connection. As long as both of you are invested sincerely and strongly in your life together, temptations can try but they’ll fail.

Death Threats Over Health Care - Old Habits New Motive?

I'm not going to delve into the legal details of this situation since it is under FBI investigation - thankfully. I'm merely going to ask a question - the first question that popped into my mind when I learned of this. It is that serious? Is this worth the lives of innocents?

We know that Gregory Lee Guisti was arrested Wednesday in San Francisco for his brazen and unveiled death threats to House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi. The ridiculous phone calls were motivated by her support of the health care bill, and in one instance, Guisti stated Pelosi's home address and cautioned that if she wanted to see it again, she would not support the bill.

Coupled with that were the death threats made by Charles Alan Wilson to Democratic Senator Patty Murray, also fueled by his anger towards her support of the fiercely-debated health care bill. According to seattlepi.com, court documents reveal that Wilson made it clear in one of his expletive-laden phone calls, "I want to ... kill you." In another, he charges, "I hope somebody puts a ... bullet between your ... eyes."

Is it that serious? Is this what we've come to? This is not the wild, wild west people. We can't go around threatening to kill people simply because we don't like decisions that are being made. Well, at least that's what I thought. And please, do tell, what is it about the health bill that's warranting the death of government officials who support it? I want to know.

Funny. If Bush's policies on the "War on Terror," and his search for "weapons of mass destruction" were enough to incite some mad man into degenerating into death threats against government officials who supported them, you know what we'd call him, right. A TERRORIST! Plain and simple.

Well, when the speaker of the house receives blatant death threats because of her support of a bill; when a senator is violently threatened because of her stand on a bill proposed by the President of the United States of America, guess what people? Those are acts of domestic terrorism and those people should be prosecuted as such.

It's okay to disagree; it's fine to get upset; it's acceptable to have an opinion completely different from that of the Commander in Chief - that's why this land is called the United States of America. But it is NOT okay to handle it this way. I thought we were past the days of ignorant bigotry that dictated that any person or persons standing in the way of what WE feel is American democracy could be disposed of in the name of "love of country." I thought so ... but I guess old habits die hard.

Restoring trust in a broken relationship

Maybe it's mistrust from lies. Maybe it's hurt from deception. Maybe it's hiding money, too many nights out at the club or something as bad as cheating. Whatever the reason, once trust is lost in a relationship, restoring it is extremely difficult. When hearts hurt and relationships are broken, how can we go back to allowing ourselves to be vulnerable?

Own your feelings - You're going to be hurt. You're going to be angry. There will be disappointment and doubt. While most people may run from these emotions, you cannot bottle them up. Realizing that there are valid negative feelings will help begin the healing process within one another. Otherwise, you'll be play acting and rebuilding on a false foundation.

Both of you must be sincere - The one who screwed up must be genuinely sorry and the one who accepts the apology must genuinely accept it. Too often people accept "I'm sorry" only to secretly wait to get back at the offender with their own lying or affair. Being sincere means letting go of the past and establishing a sense of vulnerability again that the relationship will need.

Forgiveness is key - Forgiving the person who screwed up as well as they forgiving themselves is a neccessity. Holding onto resentment and harboring thoughts of revenge will deteriorate your relationship before it truly gets started. Whether it be through counseling, prayer, talking it out with friends or all of the above, forgiving one another and yourselves is a great step towards healing a broken relationship.

Old habits cannot be repeated - Nothing damages an already wounded relationship like wounding it all over again. Lying, stealing, hiding or cheating will open up wounds barely closing on the surface, much less deeper still. When trust has been broken, whatever acts that broke it cannot be repeated at all. New habits need to form which promote the relationship, not damage it.

A new relationship has to start - Many times, a wounded relationship cannot be restarted. A new one must take its place. Take the time to explore one another, date one another and discover yourselves as you move into a fresh start, leaving behind some of the pain and difficulty that lurked in the past. Don't turn a blind eye to what happen but realize that you may have been two people who need a new beginning with each other.

No boardroom, No bedroom? Keeping Sex Alive After the Layoff

Renew the passion for each both physically and emotionally. Keep words of both encouragement and lust coming.

Communicate about your sex life - Talk, talk and talk. The more communication, the more you'll both stay on each other's mind and in each other's mental bedroom.

Explore new sexiness - Job loss often means time gained. Use it for self-discovery and sexual discovery. Use this time for exercise and health while gaining new levels of energy and sexuality. Consider new fantasies or old fantasies never fulfilled. Think about role playing or wearing sexy clothing (or no clothing) when the working spouse comes through the door!

Keep having sex - Often when unemployed, one's focus can completely turn to job-hunting. Renew You: Recycling Together

Recycling is a constant effort that not only strengthens our environment but, when done as a couple, can strengthen our relationship. Give each other that gold star when one of you makes that extra effort to recycle. Flirt and be sexy as you gather up your bins of cans and plastic! Zeta Tau Alpha Won Fair And Square

I am SO disappointed in the reaction that has erupted since the ladies of Zeta Tau Alpha: Epsilon chapter won the Sprite Step-Off Challenge - the largest national step competition in the history. This competition is a big deal!! Step competitions like this are usually battled out by the black Greek-letter fraternities and sororities that many have grown to love. Well, this time around, a white sorority from the University of Arkansas stomped their competition on the way to victory, and some people aren't happy. Check these girls out!!

They won fair and square! But I'm hearing rebuttals like, "Those steps weren't original," "They don't know the history of steppin'", and the best one yet, "Black organizations were formed because the white ones wanted to keep us out, and now they want to take this from us too!" Good heavens!

On one hand we want the world to accept and embrace our culture, and on the other we want to isolate those who are different from us. I watched that step show three times and NEVER got bored with the Zeta's routine! If a black sorority came out and executed that EXACT routine and won, there wouldn't be a problem. The fact that these girls are white should not negate the amazing work they put out there. If you have a problem with it, then step up your own game for next time.

This is so hypocritical!The largest stepping competition in the nation's history gave this sorority a chance to embrace a culture that is traditionally black; the art is sweeping the nation; a white sorority claimed first prize for the girls, and instead of celebrating diversity; instead of being proud that something dominated by blacks has now spread to other ethnicities; instead of being happy that we have led the way; instead of welcoming these girls, we rather get racial.

This is sad. Can you imagine if a black skier were to win gold in a Winter Olympic event and whites raised a ruckus about it because he was black? I could hear it now: "His color shouldn't matter;" "He won fair and square;" "They're just mad because we took their sport and did it better than them;" "Just because he's black doesn't mean he can't ski..." Man, blacks would be pissed! Jesse Jackson would come out in full swing demanding an apology. There would be hell to pay because the statements were RACIST.

We have a similar situation here. So WHAT if the winners were white? SO WHAT? Those girls were the underdogs and still came out to prove that they could do this. If anything we should be celebrating that! After all, we know what it's like to be that underdog and to want to be accepted. You can't have it both ways guys. Racist statements are racist statements ... period.

Finally, if this was such an issue, why were they allowed to compete? That was okay until they won. Well, in the words of the MC at the end of Zeta Tau Alpha's step routine, "Steppin' is for everybody. If you can step ... you can step."

Looks like Zeta Tau Alpha can step. Get over it!

Sonia Salon Did My Henna

I've only had a vague awareness of what henna was. I was born and raised in Trinidad where young Indian women adorned their bodies with henna for social and holiday celebrations, but that was the only understanding I had. Traditionally, brides have the most intricate and beautiful henna as seen below, and the application of the reddish-brown dye was even a part of the celebration. The brides adorned their bodies not just for beauty but also for joy and good luck on their special day.

Recently, henna has moved beyond the sphere of just the traditional uses. Using it for body art is quite common. To do this, the henna leaf is dried then ground into a powder which is then mixed with an acidic liquid like lemon juice or even strong tea into a paste. This smooth paste allows the body art to be as intricate,

or as simple

as you would like.

Here in Chicago, I found a wonderful salon and spa that among other services, does amazing henna tattoos, and since I'm so pleased, I HAVE to share them with you. Sonia Salon does eyebrow threading, facials and full body waxing, and I am yet to be disappointed in any service I've enjoyed. Henna is one of those services. I just recently got my arms done with a simple yet beautiful design. Olbermann Calls Out A Racist America

This is a very VERY touchy and sensitive topic, but I would be remiss to act as if it weren't an issue that was critically important. I have always believed that racism has played a factor in SOME of the opposition that President Barack Obama has faced since taking office last year. I said SOME; not all. SOME.

Truth be told, SOME whites are afraid of this country being run by a black man. There, I said it. But it's masked, hiding behind all sorts of other excuses. "I don't like his policies;" "I think his health-care policies will kill old people;" "He's a socialist!" Do you even KNOW what a socialist is? "I want my country back!" say the people at town hall meetings. I ask, "Back from ... whom?" It suggests the current "owner" has stolen America from her rightful owners.

Then at the Tea Party Convention in Nashville, former Republican Congressman Tom Tancredo told a crowd of 600 delegates that the ONLY reason that Obama won was because there is no literacy test before voting. In other words, people who were not properly educated or informed on American issues voted an undeserving man into office. I suppose that if the true representation of America had voted (because of course they didn't right?) McCain would be president?

Is Tancredo aware that literacy tests were used to prevent blacks in this country from voting? So now he wants to implement the same initiative because he doesn't like who the president is? Because he wants "certain" class and racial groups to vote "certain" types of presidents in? What is he afraid of? Tancredo went even further. He stated, "we do not have a civics, literacy test before people can vote in this country" all because America "put a committed socialist idealogue in the White House ... Barack Hussein Obama." Take a listen and notice the ovation he receives after suggesting literacy tests.

Yeah, emphasizing his middle name really drives the point home, right? Oh, he's a Muslim! Let me see his birth certificate! Well, maybe he's not American! He's from Kenya!!! Anything will do, as long as we don't accept this black man as the President of the United States of America. Sorry guys, he IS 100% American; his middle name IS just that - a name; and his birth certificate IS valid - the man is an American.

At least during the civil rights era we knew what the motivation behind hate, violence, lies and manipulation was. In some ways that was less dangerous. When a dog charges at you, you know what to expect; you know what to defend yourself against.

But disguising that charging dog as a political leader standing behind a podium, speaking into the lens of a news camera, or rallying a town hall meeting into frenzied "patriotism", is dangerous because you don't expect it to bite. And when it does ... God help us all.

A Real Woman - America Ferrera

Many know her as goofy fashionably-challenged braces-wearing Betty Suarez on ABC's "Ugly Betty." Sadly, the show is in its last season due to falling ratings. But that's not what I want to discuss here. I remember Ferrera from the first film she ever starred in, "Real Women Have Curves." Ferrera played a Mexican- American teen struggling to find a balance between her dream to go to college and the traditional values of her parents. The starlet won an acting award at the Sundance Film Festival in 2002 for her part and the film put Ferrera on the map. She was cast for "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" and its sequel, and then landed the lead role in "Ugly Betty." She shot to stardom. I wish that I could say that Ferrera's ethnicity has never been a roadblock in her career but sadly, I cannot.

Ferrera is an American citizen, born to Honduran parents, raised in San Fernando Valley, California, and has the beautiful curves of a Latina. It was this last attribute that garnered rejection at hundreds of commercial auditions. Directors also had issue with her Latin looks, and American accent and carriage: It was as though they couldn't reconcile the two elements: Latina talking and acting ... American!? In some instances, she even was asked to sound more Latina!

In "Real Women," it is clear that she fits her character Ana - an 18-year-old high school student - very well. Ferrera yet and still, before her successes, didn't fit the mold of an actress. Latin actresses usually get type cast into Latina roles, whereas a wafer-thin blonde could fit any role possible. And that is the reason I loved the film so much. Ferrera was real - very real.

In one scene, she is in the family's factory ironing dresses. It bothers Ana that none of the dresses were larger than size seven, despite the fact that all the women working there were heavier set, curvy latin women! While ironing the dresses, Ana becomes too hot for comfort and takes off her shirt revealing her round frame. The other women follow suite, freeing themselves from the shame of being "fat." That scene drew tears in my eyes; I will never forget how I felt seeing Ferrera dancing around in bra and panties, and the thought that came to mind was, "Wow, she loves who she is."

It bugs me when the typical stars are glamorized. Words like, "perfect," "gorgeous," "flawless," "sexy," are thrown around the usual skinny, Caucasian models and actresses. I'm not at all saying that they aren't beautiful, but our outlook on what beauty is needs to change. America Ferrera prancing around in her undies is beautiful! Not many of us love ourselves enough to not care about what others say about our size, hair, skin, lips, breasts and legs. "Perfection" holds celebrities slave to the knife of their plastice surgeons. Heidi Montag had 10 procedures done in one day!

If I'm only going to be happy "when I lose weight," "when I have a six-pack" "when I'm a size two," "when I can fit that little black dress," what emotional state am I going to be in the interim? Am I to be dissatisfied, miserable and disappointed till then? I'm sorry; life is too short. It's okay to have goals and to move towards those goals, but I'd also like to enjoy the journey, and to do that, I must be content and secure with what I have and with who I am ...right now. That is my challenge to myself and to you.

America Ferrera taught me a lot 8 years ago. Sometimes I just need to be reminded.
